breed survey results are now being published in the breed council magazine.i do seem to remember having seen a couple stating FAIL but dont know the reason why as it wasnt stated and i dont think it was because of the hip score.why dont you ring shelia rankin,the breed council secretary,to find out this information.

If you have a dog with a hip score above 20 with more than 12 on either hip and you still wish to have it surveyed and recieve a class one . Then you can follow the Breed Council Vice Chairmans and Breed survyors example.  when one of his bitches recieved a BVA hip score of 13-14=27 he sent the x-ray plates to Germany and the same bitch recieved a German a stamp for hips. She was then presented for a breed survey using the a stamp and recieved a class one.

West Yks Spectacular Breed Show - Including Breed Council Survey, 4 Long Coat Classes, Junior Handling with a special devised Junior Handling class Open for all ages from 6 - 19yrs where the dogs will be judged rather than the handlers.

Anyone wanting a Breed Survey form can email me and I will return one via email attachment. The cost of a survey is £20 with £15 of this going to the BC for administration purposes, inclusion onto BC database and result placed into BC Survey publication, which used to be in the form of an A5 sized hardbacked yearbook but due to the expense to produce this and the lack of take up of advertisers in it and sales of it, from this year onwards the details will appear as a 13th edition of a BC mag but purely as a Special for all GSD's Breed Surveyed over the past 12 mths. I believethe first one of this calibre will go on sale this year at Crufts.

As for some other things mentioned here. I remember at a Breed council meeting it was announced that presented with the correct paperwork a BC surveyor had given a dog with a German 'a' stamp for hips a Class 1 pass but when the BC Secretary recieved the survey forms it came to her attention that the dog in question had recieved a higher than acceptable BVA score had also recieved a creditable HD 'a' stamp result under the German system. With this information at a meeting of the BC Surveyors they discussed what should be done in such cases as although this one is the first it is not likely to be the last. I understand the Surveyors were unanimous in their decision that the Surveyor had no choice but to assess the animal on the details of the documentation presented for that animal at the time of survey, whether that be under the BVA or German System. In the case of animals which had undergone Health Checks under both systems the lesser of the two would be accepted as this would probably be the one the owner chose to present. Considering the dog would be able to pass a survey in Germany if not in the UK or visa versa it would seem ludicrous to penalise those who choose to do both systems just because you gathered more information from it. The annomoly of the fact remains that the two systems have always screened with more of an emphasis on some sections of the hip in one system than the other. This is and has been common knowledge for many years.

As for elbows, at the Nov 09 BC Meeting it was voted on and agreed that Surveys include Mandatory Elbow testing with pass grades for all animals born on or after 1st Jan 2010. Pass grades in the UK are 0, 1 or 2 anything over a 2 is a fail, there is no such elbow grade as a 3. Both elbows are scored and the highest score is the one which is used so for example a (0-0 = 0), (0-1 =1), (1-1 =1), (1-2 =2) and so on. In Germany the acceptable grades to obtain a korung and therefore for breeding are Normal, Fast Normal and Nochzuglassen, once again there is no grade after this except a fail.

All BC Surveys done prior to 1st Jan 2010 and those done over the next 18mths on animals born prior to 1st Jan 2010 the survey forms only request elbows be done as a recommendation, not as a condition of passing the survey under the current rules. Obviously all animals born from now on will have to pass elbow testing in order to recieve a Suvey Pass grade of 1 or 2. Both these grades are a pass and recommendations should be given by the surveyor on the bottom of the survey forms as notable recommendations to be followed when breeding.

Sue B.   Yer wrong ! ther is such a thing as an elbow score of 3 ! , thers bin enough of em !!!!!!.

Its a disgrace ta pass elbow scores of 2 fer breedin !!!!!, even tha failing kennel club draw the line at 1 wi ther advice fer breedin from  !!!!!!!.  If thats wot you lot ar doing thers na darn point in scoring tha elbows !!!!!!!!!.  Ya makin a mockery of tha scores an tha breed survey !!!!!!!!.

Then I succumb to your better knowledge Jonah1.  I was led to understand there was no score of 3 or at least it wasnt used as a score of 3 was a fail. However if you are now saying a score of 2 is a fail then I will ask the question at the next BC meeting if I am allowed to do so under AOB considering that the next BC meeting is likely to be a long one anyway. Otherwise it might have to wait until it can go onto the agenda of the following BC meeting, unless of course any Surveyor reading this can come on here to inform us or alternatively send me an email and I will put the infomation on here for them.
Thanks again Jonah1 for your information , if it is indeed correct we need to be aware of what the BC Survey is accepting as a suitable score.

The following was taken from the KC website, although I am not sure whether the breed survey class a score of 2 as acceptable or not.

The current BVA/KC scoring scheme for elbow dysplasia (ED) was launched in 1998. Dysplasia means abnormal development, and the degree of elbow dysplasia present is indicated by a grade assigned to each elbow on a scale of 0 to 3 (0 being the best and 3 being the most severe). Only the highest grade of the two elbows is taken as the elbow grade for that dog. The minimum age for elbow grading is one year, and each dog is only ever graded once under the scheme. Advice to breeders is wherever possible to use only those dogs with grades of 0 or 1 for breeding.

Na prob Sue B.  It does say on tha KC website ta only use elbow scores of 0 or 1.  If ya av a lookie at tha jaquenetta site elbow score list ya can see scores of 3 on ther.

There is definitely a grade 3 score on elbows I have a Daro son 0:0 hips (2:3) 3 elbows, it just proves how important it is to elbow breeding stock, this male is nearly 5yrs if I had not of elbow scored as so many do not bother he would have been used for breeding leading to even more elbow problems in the breed. I know although unscored another male sibling (from same litter) had bone shaved from his elbows.
