Jyl

Most of the Czech dogs out there are not PURE....meaning the are not 100% Czech. They usually have west german lines mixed in. ..... or Belgium, DDR mixed in. Not saying that this is bad, but they are not PURE Czech. That is what I meant.

I dont even know where to start. Coming from that aera and growing up as well as breeding those dogs, I can tell you that very few of the 100% DDR dogs still resemble what once was. Trying to breed solely 100% DDR dogs will drive you into a genetic bottleneck and will deminish the quality of dogs like we already see today.

The trend in germany is to outcross to lines with similar phenotypes and temperaments and then breed back to the DDR line again to strenghten those aspects. Sensitively done it will widen the gene pool and hopefully produce dogs that again more resemble the former ones. Especially outcrosses to PZ come to mind as many of them were based on DDRs; and again as Jyl said a lot of Czech dogs are outcrossed to west german lines.

But why would you bother? Especially in Germany the dog has to pass a breed survey to be elegible for breeding. In the US per example one could care less. To pass the survey the dog has to have the necessary temperament and drive to do so. If you breed into a bottleneck the dogs drives will eventual go downhill as well. Now you propably think...but my dog has plenty of drive chasing squirrles and balls all day long, barks at strangers, great in obedience ect. And all this is good, however it does not mean your dog can take stick pressure from a stranger. And this is still a valuable part of the breed survey.

I cherish the old DDRs and it saddens me that the fall of the wall also was the slow fall of those respectful, hard and robust dogs. I like to see those dogs again with the DDR phenotype and the courage that comes from the heart, and not from a brain that is locked in prey.

I am expecting a litter that is from an 50/50 outcross to west german x an 89% DDR girl. The litter is linebred on Sven vom Grafental (100%). The outcross in my eyes was genious and produced a hard serious dog (the whole litter was great). I shall see what this litter will bring to the table.

Pharaoh

Speaking of small gene pool, Sven is Pharaoh's grandfather.  Both of Pharaoh's parents were imported from Germany and breed surveyed.  That is getting harder to find.

My dog is 115% DDR!

FYI i would not agree to a breeder that was breeding for looks as most important i think looks should be last when it comes to breeding JMHO but it was their looks intially that sparked my attention at first.

And there is nothing wrong with it, catman. Looks should be taken into consideration, or better said the phenotype of big bone, blocky head, short hocks, an overall bold look and deep rich pigment. Put together in harmony should give you the looks the eyes desire ;)
