Interesting, isn't it - none of the dogs in the video, (except maybe the Malis

and Dutchies, lol !) are exactly UNDER angulated on their rear ends - many

look like ASL-types - but there they go, leaping and scrambling over

obstacles, some of which are quite high ...  [  I did like the 'flying dog'

in the old B&W clip ! ].

I am increasingly of the opinion that the problem with the 'polarised posts'

(W/L vs S/L) is that some people will over-generalise.  Sure, its a minority

of dogs from Show stock that can EXCEL at hundsports, more specifically

bitework, inc. 'courage' testing;  and its a minority that are of Working stock

that EXCEL in Standard conformation.  But to read some folk on these

threads (on BOTH sides, but sadly a greater number among the working

enthusiasts) each 'side' is lumped together, no exceptions allowed.  IMO  that

is their loss.  Because they forget that 'golden middle' that demonstrates the

"jack of all trades" abilities of our breed, in their pursuit of what THEY see as

excellence, they abandon the desire for the breed that can 'do it all'.  The breed

I - and by reactions to this post, many others still - adore.

Folks:

The German Shepherd Dog is a dog for all the world. It was intended to be the best of the best and in my estimation it is just that.  A dog that is incapable of acceptable Heart, Courage and Fighting instinct is unacceptible and unworthy of being included in the gene pool. A dog that is structurally compromised is similarly unacceptable.  Those two qualifications are the exact reason we have trials, breed surveys and breed shows.  Any dog worth his/her salt should be competent in all three of those arenas.  Working dog purists and Show Dog purists can not possibly explain away their animals incompetences and incapabilities in either arena and any attempts to do so should be done with blushing shamefacedness.

Ideally, German Shepherd Dogs, to be worthy of breed consideration,  should be correctly structured, courageous and posses excellent working ability.  Fortunately, many years ago, especially in Northern Germany, the need was determined to have an event intended to prove which dogs were the best of the best overall. That event was the Universal Sieger Show. It was an event wherein the dogs had to compete in the Trial and the Show Ring and do so in a single weekend event. The best dog/bitch overall was granted the title of Universal Sieger/Siegerin. Regrettably, in prior years, these events have not drawn the respect they deserve because both Show and Working Dog purists seem to be almost paranoid when they consider to expose their animals to the overall scrutiny that these events require and provide. Some saw it easier to claim the events were irrelevant than to expose the world to their dog's insufficiences.  Neither a beautiful show dog that is incapable of passing an IPO 3 trial or a hard charging Working Dog that is a structural nightmare can possibly earn the coveted title of Universal Sieger or Siegerin, and rightfully so.  The purpose of The Universal Sieger trial and show was, and still is, to provide a single venue to  show dogs for what they really are and to serve a guide for the truly serious and devoted breeders. When properly applied the Universal eliminates the untrainables, cowardlies and butt uglyies from the gene pool. Dogs that are incapable of the IPO working requirements and dogs that look more like malinois or coyotes will fair very poorly in these events, and so it should be.

The Universal Sieger Show exists in the United States of America today and gives us the best of the best and directs the breed to that most desirable state of affairs; "The Golden Middle".  The German Shepherd Dog Club of America leads the way, just as it should. Our Universal Sieger Show this year is being held at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Missouri, May 1-3. If you really think your dog has what it takes to be considered "The Best of The Best", enter and show the world what a real German Shepherd Dog is capable of doing.  The world will be watching!  This event will allow you to not only "talk the talk" but if your dog is good enough you can really "walk the walk" and be allowed to compete in WUSV's World Universal Sieger Show.
