Fast-normal (nearly normal) is the bottom third of good all of fair and the top two thirds of borderline per Fred Lanting's Canine Hip Dysplasia and other Orthopedic Disorders 2007 printing. This book is full of excellent information and I recommend it for everyone's library.

Sitasmom......wow.......that seems like a large rating span.......and vague...meaning one may not know exactly how bad, or not so good, a fast normal set of hips really are with this rating.

clc29, not really, I added a photo of the actual chart, see my previous post.

Hip ratings are the results of and subject to human interpretation so there is bound to be a natural range in what ratings mean from one organization to the next. OFA uses 3 readers and bases the final rating on a consensus opinion of the 3. As far as I know, the SV only uses one reader so the dog owner who submits to the SV only receives the benefit of one opinion. Each organization has its own criteria. An SV A2 MIGHT be an OFA excellent, an OFA good MIGHT be an SV NZ; it is unlikely but not impossible. OFA won't ceritify til 24 months or older, the SV will certify at 12 months. If an owner disagrees with an OFA evaluation, they can resubmit. As far as know the SV evaluation is final and not subject to being challenged. The OFA has a website where they illustrate what their readers look for when they evaluate xrays. I've never seen anything like that from the SV, they keep their criiteria private.
The OFA chart on their website indicates the approximate comparison between OFA and SV ratings. The OFA and the Lanting chart are pretty much in agreement; Fred's gives a better overview of the extremes of each rating.
I've already said I don't get hung up on ratings for the above and personal experiences - 2 littermates OFA mild, redone, both get goods'....24 month old female import, SV A1, same xray OFA borderline. 6 months later OFA good...OFA fair, another xray gets the same dog a good or an excellent. Normal is normal, but neither organizaton agrees 100% on what that really means. To further confuse the issue, OFA takes the stand that breeders can reduce the inicidence of HD in their dogs by only using normal x normal while the SV is more lenient and approves the use of "almost normals".
