dogshome9

One of mine had a single puppy litter just over 4 weeks ago, it is a first for me and her, her normal litter size is 8 or 9. We did nothing different mated her at the usual time only once as that is all we normally do.

We let her go 2 days past her due date from ovulation and there were no sign of her going into whelp so it was a caesarian for her 1 female puppy weighing 624gms.

Blaze did feed her baby for 24 hours then the puppy started to drop weight and became lethargic, I bottle fed her for 3 feeds and she picked up so I put her back with mum and within hours the puppy once again dropped weight so she has been bottle fed since.

This is her and believe me that look in her eyes is real, she is a cranky little BITCH but she likes my bed :) :)

edited for spelling :)

That's sweet.
Sounds like mother dog didn't have milk. That's something to look out for with only one pup; not enough hormones to stimulate production.

Oh darn, no money breeding dogs? Now you tell me.

Blitzen,
Had you went ahead and skipped titling and health testing etc,
well, you would have probably had a litter of 14 Wink Smile

LOL.... that's probably the truth, dogz.

Petoasis, don't worry, you are already ahead of the game, by getting her x-rayed at least you know she will be having something,
and just because it showed only one pup on x-ray doesn't mean there's not another one or two hiding outWink Smile

Dogshome9, what a cute puppy, you will develop a special bond with her!Heart

Here is my singleton, yet I don't think I can call her that cause there were two other pups, but they were too far
up in the womb and had already passed away after Jutta was born.....

Jutta Hipp cost me about $1,500.00 cause her mom stayed over night at the vets on IV,
they sent her mom home the next day and she passed the last stillborn pup.

I ended up placing her mom cause she had very bad bitch fights with her half sister, just her half-sister, (3 too many)! Her mom is very much loved by her new family, she is an only dog and loving the one on one attention, she is treated like a princess.

Jutta Hipp was raised by her mom, her dad (he's 7 yrs.), her grand-ma (She's 9 yrs.), great-grand-ma (She's 12 yrs) & her aunt (She's 5 yrs.), I was real paranoid she wouldn't have enough play time so I made sure she was kept busy! Teeth Smile

Here is Jutta Hipp at 11 months old :))
She's everything I love about the breed, nice even temperament too, she's here for a very long time to come!

When is she due Petoasis?

At least if there is only 1 you can now be prepared for what is ahead. She could be like my girl and the hormones don't kick in but I hope that for you it will be different and she will be fine and deliver it herself with out intervention.

I too kept thinking that there might be 1 or 2 hidden but not to be.

Thanks!  kitkat everyone thinks that she is a keeper, yes we do have that bond, she follows me constantly, hates to be picked up though growls and wriggles even bit me yesterday (:

I am trying her with my other litter each day for a short time while I watch, 8 days difference in age but she is holding her own, hates getting her tail pulled and look out if she gets angry Angry Smile that short fuse will kick in.

Nice girl SM.

In reference to the comment about seeing many people posting of having small litters, I do believe that there is the possibilty the litters MAY have been larger in number at birth, but some breeders do cull their litters. So when they post a litter being small, it may have actually been larger, but they do not post, "We had a litter of 10 but culled 5 of them leaving us with a small litter of 5.  I don't mean to be ugly, rude or point fingers and accuse, but I do know that this does happen.  Not every breeder allows ALL puppies born alive to live.  Thats just the way it is....JMO
