I always enjoy the kennel design threads. The side-view diagram was helpful.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your original post correctly-
If the flooring is made out of wooden or synthetic decking then how do you clean underneath it? Decking isn't for every dog- mine hates to be confined so she'd chew her way to freedom.

I agree with Chaz-a roof is a good idea. I'm looking forward to not having to shovel the snow out of my dog's kennel at 5 AM this winter. My kennel is here: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/forum.read?mnr=114033. It's not exciting but it does the job.

Have fun building this weekend! Please post a picture when you are finished.

I will be using treated decking for the "floor" of the kennel.  Bought the material last night.  She will be a kennel dog with limited house time, but plenty of yard/training time.  Just got done with training today, so no time to work on it today... but my brother volunteered to help me build it so we should be able to get it mostly done tomorrow.  Will post pics when complete.  Also, I intent to build a roof over it as well but my main concern at this point is getting the structure built.  Also as far as cleaning,  I am designing it so I can move the deck portion to clean/disinfect underneath with limited disassembly of the kennel.  I realize a concrete pad would be easier, but I rent so pouring a pad is out of the question.  I also prefer a "softer" surface for the dog.  Overall, I think the design will work well and should be appealing to look at and not just a cage in the back yard.  I may even put vinyl siding on it to match the house.  Or just paint it... we will see...

I have seen many kennels, including boarding facilities built on the decking. works great.

I did my roof a little different from what chaz suggested. I was going to sink the posts for the support, but ended up bolting 2x4's to the kennel frame at the coners and in the middle. framed this in arond the top, metal roofing on top of this. it's very sturdy and works great for me.

BTW laura, the fence on your kennel is also very weak.  I have had puppies break thos up enough to get out.  When the fence gives to them pulling on it with their teeth it just ecourages them do pull it more.

Here are our kennels.  Had them for over 1 year now and we love them.

We finished our kennels last year, and they have proven to be VERY durable and easy to keep clean in our long/cold winter months.  They are an indoor/outdoor kennel setup with the outdoor section on a raised grate system.Vom Chugach Kennel   Vom Chugach Kennel

I have a couple more pictures and larger images available to see here

These are my kennels, not current pictures but taken during the time I was building.  They are 5x5 inside and 5x10 outside.  The puppy pen is 5x10 inside and 30x8 outside.  My dogs are only locked up when I am not home.  They spend most of the day in the 1/2 acre backyard.
It is hot where I live so i used to have a mister system on the outside of the garage, but since then I have installed a Swamp cooler/evaporated cooler in the garage and no longer use the misters.  The garage stays very cool during the hot days.
The garage was already in place when we purchased the property it is 20x24, and It worked out perfectly for the dogs, as it was already in the backyard.  I also installed a Bathing tub and a washer and dryer in the garage for dog blankets and such.

Definately some nice setups!!! Bhall, that top portion of the kennels? Is that for heat escape or ventilation? Or both? And last kennel on R, the green fabric/screen. Is that just covering a fence panel wall?

Here's mine, I now have three kennels, just haven't taken a pic yet. But I rent on a farm so nothing permanent for landlord or next tenant. Raised because of the morning dew, rain etc. Corner posts are 6X6s, band board or rim joists are 2X10s notched and bolted. sub frame 2X10s, sheathed with 3/4 T&G ply coated with a waterproof rubber membrane you roll on. Black to absorbe the winter sun. When temps reach 90 degrees an industrial fan comes on to fan all three kennels. Roof sheathed, tar papered and shingles with floor and roof being pitched to rear. The picture I wanted to post said "the file is corrupt" so Ill have to take some new ones. But here you get the idea. Now there's  three kennels and a roof.

Those of you that have the wooden decks.  How do you keep your kennels from smelling?  I like the idea of a raised deck but as 99.9 of the dogs we have shipped in a poop stompers I would need to be able to clean it.   Nothing like the smell of shepherd doo doo smashed in the boards ewwww....
