 Oh, Mylanta. I've seen some like that. They still look horrendous when properly positioned, but that positioning is way off.  

Let me assure all of yous GSD lovers, Both mother & father are very well known in the GSD show ring. ARCHIE is our boys name. We thought we where buying from the best GSD breeders in Scotland. ARCHIE. goes for his first new hip on 11th April.both me and my wife feel it is only fair to give ARCHIE a chance in life.It will cost approx £4k per hip.And the insurance company will only cover so much. As for the breeder well we have tried we have even asked for our money back, but she is out of contact we are deeply gutted. Archie is a lovely looking dog and has the most gentle nature.Even thou has soft ears.

Has anyone on the forum had this operation that Archie is about to undergo,can anyone give me advice,pitfalls,etc.It's alot of hard earned cash,and a suppose am just hoping Archie turns out fine when his 2 new hips are in place. Thanx

 None of mine have ever needed anything like that, but a friend of mine's rescue had 2 total hip replacements (at around 5yrs old) and he did very well w/his new hips. 

To the OP:  Mirasmom is right;  I have seen golden's with these type x-rays;  and believe it or not they also did fine as they do not have any bone on bone rubbing and causing friction;  that is what causes arthritis and pain.  Is this dog able to get around OK right now?  My concern about giving him the hip replacement surgery at this age is he is not done growing and things could change inside those replacements.  And even when you do his replacement hip surgery he will still need to be kept very, very lean, some would consider skinny or rank thin;  and he will need to have a very low impact exercise problem like swimming.  So sorry for this to happen to your dog, you obviously love him very much.  I wish you the best of luck on his recovery,  Nan

 What prompted you to have the films taken? Could you please tell us what led you to take him to the vet? Did he have any sort of trauma? 

Please get several opinions.

Arthritis is the problem in HD, not the fact that the joint isn't formed right. If you could muscle him up a bit (swimming is best), if he can do that (you didn't say what his symptoms are or if he has any), he could very well have a fine life, as muscles will keep that joint in place. If his sockets are not being ground against his femoral head (and his sockets are already on their way to being gone), he may not be in that much  pain. I would be very hesitant to do total hip replacement on a dog this young of this breed.

There is Arthritis there,the time the operation comes around Archie will be 11months, Archie, is moving around and at times you would think there is nothing wrong with him,This being our 3rd GSD we know what to expect with the breed,Archie has been robbed of his puppy years, and so have we, We only feel it is only right to give him a chance. That saying,,,, A DOG IS FOR LIFE,,, For the Mother & Father and there pedigree you would have thought these problems would have been in there later days not so young.Plus his soft ears,I am in the understanding his mother is due another litter A hope the breeder tells future owners there is a possible weakness in the blood line.

Jenni I felt his back legs where kinking in,he was struggling to go up and down stairs,just in general felt he had to sit all the time and when he did sit something wasn't right,we first thought that it was just him growing. But a knew something was just not right

Well those are bad hips. I thought I had a dog with the worse hips ever. My vet recommended a procedure where they remove the heads off the femurs. He said it works very well on young dogs. I declined and give joint supplements and mild excercise. But at 4 years of age I do not expect him to have much more quality of life/

Poor pup. Im stunned.
