I believe a very important criteria for any serious workingline kennel is to find a breeder who actually trains and titles their own dogs.
A lot of breeders, regardless of their "lines", just snap up titled dogs and breed them based on the pedigree or the scorebook without actually knowing anything about the true heart of the dog. This is NOT the path to success for the conscientious breeder.
Just because a dog arrives off the plane from Germany with pretty scores in the book does not mean the dog even knows the SchH routine. Furthermore, not all "points" dogs are good breeding dogs, even if the titles were legitimately earned.
If you are looking for an "older" puppy - BUYER BEWARE! The first question that ought to be running through your mind when you see the "top sport prospect" up for sale is "What is wrong with that dog?" Why is the dog for sale? Regardless if you're buying from across the pond or here in the US.
Every once in a while a buyer can get lucky and a good young dog might be returned to the breeder through no fault of its own. Perhaps more likely the breeder was stuck with a pup that nobody else wanted to buy and so they "held the dog back to see how he develops". Wish I had a buck for every time I saw THAT in an ad.
Whenever you buy an older pup you not only buy the dog but all the baggage that comes with it - whether it's a poor foundation or good training - chances are you'll never know until the money has changed hands and you've got to live with the consequences.
I'm a big fan of starting with a baby puppy. At least all the mistakes in training are MINE and I have a better idea of how to deal with them. I hate it when visitors show up to club with an adult dog with "issues" - so much more work to undo what was done.
A good sign of a qualtiy WL breeder... they will NOT have a pup for everyone. Any breeder who immediately just happens to have the perfect dog available for each and every prospective buyer... yeah right!
Off the soap box now...

In case you'd want to know, that litter happens to be a mix of show and workinglines.

This breeder is an active trainer and competitor and has many years of experience. My female from her was bought as a puppy and is everything she said she would be. Have dealt with a fancy name mentioned in one of the responses and the female from that kennel was very sweet but very disappointing as a dog for schutzhund and THREE times the price. Soon I will be going for the 1 with my not quite two year old girl (in weeks) and looking forward to her little half brother who is not quite 6 weeks. Eichenluft said this female was wonderful for the sport and I can tell you she was right. Barb
