Well, is this behaviour a product of environment or an innate behaviour?
One of my dogs behaves like this, but I have owned her since the age of 5yrs so I am unable to speculate. Let's just say, she makes me uneasy at feeding time and the other two I own do not challenge her for food- ever.
I think you could promote this type of behaviour by enacting a "musical chairs" style of feeding- 5 dogs = 4 bowls and repeat. Someone is going to get grouchy by day 12!
What's the benefit?

In both my Dogs food drive is a natural thing and they respond to it and that is how they are trained in Obed with the help of food
The knack is giving it to them in training without losing the fingers or part of them I think i have perfected that now, but still get caught with Pup Izzy at times, All aids of training for me must come from a natural want of the Dog it is finding out what makes the Dog work better with one thing than another
Plus my dogs are mad on the ball on a short rope and they get this during and certainly at the end of each training session

It just shocks me that someone with such a big name in the Wkg Shepherd World would have to resort to kicking, and pinching a puppy while he is eating, to me this is called massive aggravation, and pulling at his ears is no way to create a real dog.
On the contrary this is how you create a big pile of crap.Food drive should be natural.Who in the hell ever thought of creating food drive by mistreating a pup.I am more than sure that if I dont feed my son for a few days he would be posessive also, and no telling what he will do if I was to attempt to take it from him, much less mistreat him after not eating for a few days!!
C'mon folks, this video simply shows a dog trying to survive not trying to bash the kennel---but now I am!
He is trying to survive,at the same time knowing he is not a match for the handler at that age hence the reason he is just standing there not biting--just like the adult in the video. If you ask me this is the BEST way to create an unstable dog!!
I would love to see this same handler come on over and even attempt this type of foolishness on my so-called pup!!
Gotta love America!!!

Is guarding a bowl a dominance issue or a food drive issue? Or is it both? I thought it was more about being dominate and attacking lesser dogs that tried to get near.
I have a puppy, who has never been starved, or aggrivated in any way. Her food drive so high, that I cannot use it to teach her basic puppy commands. She gets excited, to the point of shaking - even for dog food of a different flavor! Her prey drive is very high also, if something moves she attacks..and won't let go...........and she is very dominate too. The only peace we have is when she naps.

SitasMom,
That is a promising dog you have but do not try to teach him more food drive as shown on the video

My Dogs will eat there food right away it is gone in a minute of giving it to them in fact i slow the Pup down by feeding it a bit at a time
Plus any one of my dogs i can put my hand in the bowl whist they are eating from it and take a bit of food out then give it to them by hand afterwards but i fdo not make a practise of doing so but i can do it because they were taught at a puppy stage so that will remain with them the rest of there days
But i train my dogs with food Plus they have a huge liking for the Ball on a rope all in all two very keen Dogs who will respond to almost anything
