I was hoping the Illustrated Standard of the GSD by Linda Shaw would show examples of faulty tails, but it doesn't though it does mention gay tails. However, Linda also did the Illustrated Standard for the Shiloh Shepherd, and since Shilohs often have bad tails due to the giant malemute blood that was brought in, it has some excellent pictures of different types of faults:

(The correct tail for a Shiloh looks the same as a GSD's tail.)
Hope this is helpful.
And yes, forgive me for mentioning the 'S" word!
Here's the link to the illustrated standard for the GSD. It's very interesting reading!

Forgiven, forgiven!! That said though, he does have the "ring tail" look more than the gay tail. Just an interesting fault...I wonder what causes it.
Thanks for the wonderful info. Bookmarked the first with the notes on standards!

Here are three pictures of three pure bred German Shepherds. As per my understanding the first one has a faulty tail and faulty tail set due to stepped croup. The second one has an acceptable tail with fair tail set, the third one has a perfect tail and a perfect tail set with a nice croup.
As I have noticed many pure bred German Shepherds have faults. Therefore if one has a fault it does not mean it is not pure bred.

I would bet money there is no huskey in this dog. He's GSD thru & thru, just has a fault in the tail. They all have faults, I think he is a lovely dog. Just enjoy him.

Lyz,
He looks purebred to me too... Just a poor tail. Without his papers, his scorebook will list him as a mixed breed. At least that was what USA told me when I lost my boy's papers in a move. They will change his book (or give you a new one, I'm not sure which they do) if, by chance you are able to get his AKC papers later on.
Does your club have a trial coming up? Just curious, ours is in December. Maybe we'll see you there :-)

Stacy,
You know, I really don't care if they say he's a Malamute x Poodle it's the score that counts all the way. And I believe you can get another copy of the papers from AKC? I'm not sure as I haven't dealt with AKC in a very long time, but if your dog HAD papers, or the parents still have a registered litter copy you may be able to get another set.
And I believe we have a trail in either December or January. Sometime when it's cold, naturally. Not sure yet but I can almost bet it's middle of December or early January. If so, I'll keep an eye out for ya. I'll be pretty easy to spot.
I have the dog with the funny tail lol.

LOL Funny tail or not your dog is pretty cute. :-)
Yes, I did have papers and lost them before sending them in. To make a long story short, the Belgian registry will send me a copy for about $250.00, after they run an ad for 3 months in their publication (to make sure he wasn't stolen) And then I can get my documentation *sigh*
I haven't dealt with AKC in, wow probably 12 years or so. I tried to register a toy poodle, and after I sent the papers in, AKC informed me that the breeder lost her AKC privledges, for one shady reason or another...and AKC refused to honor my puppy's papers. I haven't bothered with them since.
So I have no idea if you'll be able to get the papers. Possibly if you can find out (or know) who the breeder is you can contact them and maybe get a copy. But if you are not planning on using him for breeding, Well, like you said, then only the score counts! :-) Either way, it will be fun for both of you working together. It sounds like you already are.
Hope to see you on the field.
Stacy
P.S. I will be the one in the trial who gets an award for negative points LOL
