Rugers Guru

by Rugers Guru on 03 June 2010 - 02:06

Well, I have experienced this first hand in the last few weeks. Ruger was on raw for the first year and a half of his life and always ate his stool. For the past year, he has been on a good kibble and never ate it. I receintly switched back to raw and he eats his stool again. I truly believe he is missing something, but I cannot feed him kibble, he has too many other issues.  You have to suppliment on raw, period.... I am learning this now. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for all the advice. To answer some questions he seems ery health has a great coat and vet is very happy with him. He is on Purina Proplan which from the research I have done is a good puppy food in UK. However, I have never heard about the raw food etc so may have to look into that further. Thanks for all the advice so far.

Harry.

My dog is 70 days old.
Rex did the  same  thing of your dog.
The vet advised me to mix his food with a bit of ground beef. The vet told me it would change the flavor and the scent to food. I did it for a few days (Rex eats 4 times a day,)
Rex did not return to eat his poop. (Rex foods's is Proplan Puppy!!).
Good luck!!!

Great post Prager and I agree, although I am a dog food feeder, because I'm just not organized enough yet to feed raw.  However, I do add enzymes to it.

Someday, when I get more confidence, I will feed raw.  If I continue to have all these problems of itching and pano, it may be sooner than later.

My dad feeds junk dog food and has never had a problem, go figure.  Different breed.

Yep!!!!!
Dogs were raised for 10s of thousands of years on junk food and scraps. And now we have scientifically balanced, optimal, holistic, nutritionally superantiextracontramultiextrauniqe granulated  foods in shiny bags and then have problems. Go figure. (facetious).
FEED MEAT! Meat is the best suplemant! Cooked or raw. (Raw is more risky at first and only for older dogs.)

Yes, Feed Raw they say.
Not over here you will not unless you are rich like Prager and Co
two Chicken portions cost 8 USA Dollars
and 2lb of  Beef will set you back 24 USA dollars and that is not the best cuts as well
Yes, at those prices i can live on Vegs and the Dogs fed Raw but then that would not last long
You cannot buy the stuff over here like you can in the USA so it is pointless speaking in such a glib manner of how much better it is not all of us can do what they want even if we want too
Years ago 50 to 60 to be precise we fed the Dogs on Scrapes from the Table they took no hurt and remained healthy, We could not feed the Family let alone Dogs in those days,
Everything is easy to do when you have it to hand and Cheap that does not apply to every country

my dog had/has the same habit. A metal can with pennies, shock collar, pinch collar (choose your negative reinforcement). When ever he/she tries to eat the stool shake the can, when she complies reward her with praise. Immediately dispose of the stool. My pup will not eat her stool when i'm around, but if i leave her around it alone for too long she will still eat it.

So still looking for a 100% cure
