not with this thread, as most people who have commented said character and working ability are what makes them a gsd.
the standard can be interpreted in many different ways, depending on how many different people read it. thats why we have ONE standard, but we have types such as the german showlines, german working lines, DDR type dogs, czech dogs, american showline, american pet bred, UK/Alsation and the list can go on. if people bred by the standard, why don't all the dogs look the same? most breeds lack the variation that ours does. you still have a show/working split in some breeds, but for the most part, each looks like the other.

A month or so ago there was a news report in ‘The Times of India’ newspaper that brought tears to my eyes, I wish I had kept that report. But, now as I age by one week my brain ages by two months.
Two children, a 9 month old baby and a 4 year old were left in the shack which so often serves as a home here, in the same room and tethered to a stake by a rope was a male GSD.
In the report it stated that the investigation conducted afterwards showed that a fire had broken out and the dogs rope or whatever had burned through, the dog although badly burned went into the inferno and firstly brought out the baby and returned then to retrieve the other child.
Unfortunately both of the children died and two days later the dog was still lying outside staring at the remains of the shack. It refused to move and got stroppy with all who tried to move or coax it away.
Please do not ask the obvious regarding the parents, the children, or the other two children that the parents took with them when they went out.
THIS IS INDIA! Crap happens.
And? OH yes:-
That is what makes a GSD
