German Shepherd DogVA2 Lex Preußenblut SCHH3, FH"The war was over. The Americans in Germany who knew dogs were really taken by the dogs they were seeing, these great working animals. The pressure was on to sell Lex and it was finally done for $10,000 an unbelievable price for the time. Supposedly there was such a strong feeling about him getting out of the country that he was poisoned on the way out and he died." ~Garrett Gordon Author of German Shepherd Dog History "Lex sired more VA stock than any other dog of his day and through his son VA Rolf Osnabrucker Land and other members of that 'R' Osnabrucker Land litter was to be widely bred to in Germany. Lex was particularly successful in producing strong heads, good fore assemblies and adequate hind angulation with good width of thigh. In the main he gave strong black and tan saddle marked stock but with this line came some tendency to colour paling. It also seems to be particularly prone to cryptorchid problems and many animals inbred on Lex or Rolf produced this. Some excess of body length and a tendecy to short forelegs can come via Lex as was seen in Danko stock but on the whole Lex was a valuable sire who might have been more widely used than Rolf and to better effect had he, Lex, not been poisoned in 1949 when still only five years old." ~Author Unknown ....15.6 years ago

German Shepherd DogVA2 1937 INT CH Odin vom Busecker Schloß PH ROMAs I noted Odin has what appears to be a heavy head (in several pix), and always have a problem with the large size/big bone of modern German dogs, I was tickled to find this comment about Odin from the Sieger Show: Germany Sieger Show---September 19th, 1936---V1-Excellent "Fully developed. Very good body construction and a far reaching gait. Appears to me today to be of a dry type of herding dog, but however, somewhat over heavy and therefore does not show in the long gaiting the energy or endurance of a herding dog. One premolar missing." Also: Frankfurt Sieger Show/Young Dog Class---Top seven dogs "... very good in structure, but, for his age, very big and heavy." He was noted as 88 lbs and larger than the even more famous Pfeffer v. Bern. Modern trendies, please take note. ....15.6 years ago

German Shepherd DogSIEGER Hussan vom Haus Schütting ZPR"The 1932 Seiger was Hussan v Haus Schuetting, a Utz son ex a Nores daughter. In view of the fact that pedigrees are studied at the Sieger show this award is difficult to fathom because although Hussan was a good specimen, better perhaps than Utz, he was likely to carry many defects. This proved to be the case and colour paling, long coats, light eyes, cryptorchidism, temperamental failings, faulty tails and even sickle hocks were to be laid at Hussan's door. He, too, went the Far Eastern route and one shudders to think what was happening to the breed there at that time." ~Author Unknown -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "It looks like Hussan could be short in upper arm but with wonderful shoulder, back, croup and balance. Some interesting things about Hussan’s pedigree: Lined 4 - 3 on Etzel von Herkulspark and 5 - 4, 4 on Jung Tell v. Kriminalpozei. The mother is not only a Nores v.d. Kriminalpozei daughter, but she is line bred on Horst v. Boll 3 - 4. Before being exported to China, Hussan was the Sieger in 1932. To that point he had produced 321 registered offspring in Germany. Not a lot of offspring for a Sieger but it looks like they had held him back from the title for at least a year, the "in" breeders would have used him enough to get what they wanted. On the first year he was shown, Marie Leary wrote of her annoyance, really panning the winner, who the S.V. could not get the breeders to use. Hussan was another tremendous bonus for German breeding, a credit to the creativity of Doctor Funk. It is not until one goes on from Hussan, seeing the Hussan descendants appear and reappear in the great dogs that came after him, that his importance to the breed is realized. Something has to have come from his mother side, and SHE was a daughter of Nores von der Kriminalpolizei. She also had additional lines to Jung Tell and Dewet Barbarossa. Again it is the Nores influence that is so surprising. Perhaps it was the breeding with Nores being back of Hussan's mother, which denied him the Sieger title for a year. In 1931, other reports about the show criticized Hussan not going Sieger. Instead it was given to Herold von Niederlausitz SchH, for the second year in a row. Technically Hussan was a better specimen than Utz v Haus Schutting. The breeding that produced Hussan was contrary to all the recommendations of Von Stephanitz. Is it possible that the creation of this dog could have hastened the end of Von Stephanitz?" ~Gordon Garrett Author of German Shepherd Dog History ....15.6 years ago

German Shepherd DogGreif (Sparwasser)(Abst. unbek.) Picture removedTrying to boost the (capitalized?) white German Shepherd fancy? I don't recall if it was Greif, but DEFINITELY 1 of the major dogs behind the breed (i.e., ancestor of Horand or so forth) Max mentioned as WHITE. Like it or not. And if the caption itself says the dog pictured may in fact be 1 of Greif's offspring - where does that leave you? THERE WERE WHITE DOGS, as there were long-haired dogs (Russ v d Krone) and many varieties. It's the truth. And how does having "parents unknown" (that's true of ALL the original dogs; you have to start somewhere), or that the dog wasn't registered, mean the dog was not white? ....16.2 years ago
German Shepherd DogKLC Terra MariaAlso, has submissive temperament with cowardly tendencies (doesn't like "ghosts"; never afraid of people). No real guard instinct. (All these problems have eased with age.) Sudden food-aggression appeared at 2yo. Otherwise, generally over-anxious dog who loves people and dogs a bit too much, and nice and submissive to whatever you want (vets love her), but not a good example of the breed. -owner ....16.3 years ago
