Bernd‘s sire, Watzer von Bad Melle, was an Axel bon der Deininghauserheide, son from a Rolf daughter.
Bernd was described as typically Rolf, big head, rich black and tan color , and a good front. He was to prove one of the most influential sires in modern American breed history, producing consistently good tempered but tough and healthy progeny with good forehands, bone structure, substance, head and body length.
But he was also criticized for weak ears, steep croup, loose ligamentation, long coats and a high percentage of hip and elbow dysphasia. Bernd introduced the solid-black gene into the American breed.
Judge and author Garrett Gordon said that „breeders bred good bitches to him, some from the satisfied customers that had gotten dogs from Ernie Loeb before.“
