Irregular Heat Cycle?? Pls HELP...tks - Page 1

Hi there, my 5 yr old female GSD usually comes on heat between 5-6 months intervals. Her last cycle ended in June last year and she is yet to come on her next cycle. By calculations, she is about 2 months late. She showed signs of pre-menstrous cycle such as heavy shedding about a month and half ago but has yet to come on heat. Prior to this, she had a unsuccessful breeding session in June last year. Could this be related?? Can anyone explain why? Tks

Did she have a silient heat already? Have you done any bloodwork to check her thyroid? You can also try raspberry leaves extract. Supports the reproductive system. Google it. Just some suggestions.

My dog used to come in every 5 1/2 months too but as she's gotten older (she's 6 now), she's spready it out to about every 7 months now.

Some girls have longer cycles, but this seems irregular.
If you are open for alternative options, give your girl homeopathic Pulsatilla C30 once a month until heat starts - does wonders for a lot of young females (human and canine!).

oops, I see, she is in her prime years....if she is very exhausted in general and does a lot of working you could try homeopathic Sepia C30 once a month instead of Pulsatilla C30.

I have been told that their is medicine that induces a heat cycle.  Not sure of its name though.

Has she ever whelped before? Was the last unsuccessful breeding natural or AI? Do you or your vet suspects why she didn’t take (i.e. wrong timing). Those are important questions to answer before you start worrying. If she never had babies before - 5 is late for the first time and natural breeding with experienced stud dog is the best try. AI doesn’t’ give you100% guarantee.
It’s not unusual for females to have slightly different seasons depending on the time of the year (spring season can be different than autumn season) – some bitches get pregnant only once a year (usually spring season) even though they go through winter heat.

As always vet experienced in breeding dogs will be able to help you more than us. We can give you only some hints on what may be going on without having a close look at your girl. Vet can do ultrasound and see if anything is wrong and if not he can put your bitch on a hormonal therapy to induce heat, give her antibiotics to prevent any infections that may prevent pregnancy, etc... 

could be thyroid. This is easy to determine.

Past that, may need to be evaluated by a reproductive specialist. A friend of mine had similar issues and it turned out to be a cyst in reproductive organs. She has been normal since removed.
