I had a long break in my association with GSDs - over 40 years, due to being involved with my primary occupation and though I remember quite a few things there are many memories which are vague.
One of these is whether it is normal for some GSDs to rasp quite loudly while panting after exertion - one of my adult dogs does that and I am not quite sure if I have come across it before in other GSDs. Can anyone in this august forum throw some light on it?

Some make a "snorting" sound as they heavily breath in and out...and it be normal for that particular dog.....BUT, if it were my dog.....I would take a trip to the vet to make sure it wasn't " vascular" related. I could then feel at ease.

Megaesophagus can cause an odd noise when the dog is breathing heavily.

Thank you crheurta. I did not consider it a major problem as it happens only for short duration after heavy exertion, but now that you mention it, I will make a visit to the vet if I can catch it when it is present otherwise he may not be able to identify the problem. I vaguely remember one of my dogs many years ago that seemed to have had a similar problem and she lived to be 10.
And thank you too Mary. I did not know of this condition and that it runs in GSDs - I researched it and will ask the vet to check, None of the other symptoms are there though and he polishes off his food and is ready to work and play at the slightest chance he can get - though he did get carsick as a pup (brought out bile mainly) there has been no regurgitation ever.

Shezam1,
Would you mind much keeping us informed on how the dog is???
I think "whatever" info you find out, would be informative to anyone who may have a similar problem.
With this breed.....early info is a great preventative for future heartbreak!
