I would guess that your 'donation' must go to a registered charity/society before you get a tax receipt.   Canada gov site has all the info you need.

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/charities-giving/charities/operating-a-registered-charity/issuing-receipts/what-information-must-on-official-donation-receipt-a-registered-charity.html

You need to speak with a tax professional about this. Depending on whether you're operating a breeding kennel and filing as a business, or if you're simply an individual who breeds occasionally as a hobby, the answer will likely be quite different. Free tax advice from an internet message board is not something I'd recommend anyone rely upon.

Hexe - I gave a direct link to the Canada government site which dealt specifically with the question. If the OP can't read the government site then maybe a professional would be needed, but otherwise it's pretty clear to me what the stipulations are.

Possible difference here in that Canada is like the UK, with a free central Government set of websites on tax and benefits matters, that everyone can access, and which do give the definitive word; not sure each and every one of the States goes in for such public information provision ? Even then, its probably a good idea to cross-check Tax advice because it is not unknown for supposedly impartial government advice to lean in the direction of (politically calculated) savings for government !

Fine for the Canadian OP; but if such a service is unavailable to other [ e.g. American readers ], Hexe's warning is timely. Other websites could be presented by sources who really do not know all the 'wrinkles'.  Especially since dog breeding and supply is a bit 'niche' as a topic.

I have donated a couple of cars in the past to Goodwill. they are government recognized charity for tax purposes in the U.S.

If I had donated it to a needy person without a car, there would have been no tax
benefits. I suspect it would be the same with a dog unless you go through a charitable organization.

like others said, best answered by a tax professional in your country.

Thank you, I think you are all correct. I guess it is probably worth asking some charities to see if that is a possibility.

I'm surprised no one asked about donating an ex-spouse.

ML, do you live in Canada, do you have an ex wife you would like to donate and why are you surprised that no one has asked about donating an ex?

I have an ex husband and at the time I'd have gladly PAID someone to take away 😆
