I already consulted Google and found that information. Was thinking I’d receive a more human version of what this product is all about.

Thank you for trying.

Human version??  Do you mean you want to hear from someone who has used this product on themselves?

by Alamance on 09 June 2018 - 17:06

Dog version. Was just wondering about the use of this product in dogs by anyone.

It is one of the medications used by Dr. Clemmons in his degenerative myelopathy studies. I never used it on my suspected DM dog so have no information on usage. I think you need to get it from a compounding pharmacy (with a vet's prescription).

Sorry I couldn't provide more info.

Used it back in the mid-90's as part of Clemmons' original treatment protocol for DM. It is a prescription product, but my vet used to just call the Rx in to my local pharmacy and I'd get it filled through there. As some one else has said, however, it may be that you need to get it through a compounding pharmacy these days. It was a relatively inexpensive product when I was using it, but doxycycline and tetracycline used to be cheap, too, so who knows what the cost of Amicar is now?

Dog I was treating is one of the dogs featured in Clemmons' "DM of the GSD" video as an example of an affected mid-stage dog [she's a black & tan, American lines dog shown moving on sand trails in a wooded area]. She was already 13 years of age when treatment began. Using the Amicar, the vitamin and nutritional supplements and the exercise program Clemmons recommendd, I did see marked improvement in her mobility over the course of that year, until losing her at a week past her 14th birthday to hemangiosarcoma. Did not have any problems with adverse effects from the Amicar, administered it as instructed by mixing dose with chicken broth and syringing the mixture directly into her mouth.

Hope that's of some help.
