How does importing work?

Say I wanted to import from Germany to UK, what would I need to do and is there anything the breeder needs to do?

Who arranges the pet passport, the inoculations, export papers, vet checks etc, and if pups can't enter UK until 16 weeks, does the breeder board the pup?

Are there extra costs once pup arrives in the UK?

Thanks.

The breeder/seller should take care of all this stuff, but the buyer will need to pay for it.
That said in case the puppy costs € 800, you most often have to pay extra for export papers ( Bescheinigung ), vet check, and boarding for the additional time, including the costs for the ride to the airport, and the shipping fees.
The International pet passport most often ( although not always ) is part of the original puppy price.
Some German breeders don´t like to ship to the UK because of the time frame ( age ), it is what it is.
About all of this you should talk BEFORE you buy the pup, not afterwards.

Hi,
Thanks for the info; not planning anything yet, just looking at options if I can not find what I require here in UK.
I have a year to decide anything.

I am pretty sure you are able to find good breeders in the UK, one year should be time enough... :)
The next option would be a trip to good old Germany, not that expensive, and our breeders prefer to sell good dogs to people they know personally... :)

I would try and find a breeder either in Germany or the UK and begin a conversation with them...Get to know them...Build a relationship with them then you also have a chance to ask whatever questions you might have...
I'm not sure in the U.K. but in the U.S. you can contact the Dept. of Agriculture and ask questions as to everything from What Shots are Required to any Quarantine there is...
You have plenty of time to begin asking what you need...
Maybe you can ask on here (PDB) what you're interested in...Showline or Working line...and who might be good to contact...
I know that Importing has gotten a bit easier for the people in the U.K.

I am not in the U.K. but I have some dog friends there and they have found good dogs there...Depending on what you want...There are some good breeders there of Working line German Shepherds...
It all depends on what you want...I think there's some sort of restrictions on Importing puppies but not sure...I think it's mainly a concern of bringing in diseases...But some of those links can give you a much clearer picture...

@Q Man: I am looking for a dog that has an impeccable temperament, that will be good for personal and family protection and hopefully will be able to do schutzhund with. It will be a family dog and live in the same house as a smaller dog; so not sure what type of drive I should be looking into.

I am looking into DDR, Czech, WGWL or a combination. I am drawn to the sables but will not sacrifice temperament for colour.

Learning as much as I can about working lines, hence the reason I am waiting a year before deciding, willing to wait more if need be.
