Gawd BW you are SO literal !!!  And you will NEVER get a sense of humour.

Take your dog's left front paw... it has five 'toes', yes ?  The fifth one, on the inside of the leg, is a smaller one, carried off the floor. Yes ?

Roughly equivalent to our 'thumb'.  Except its not opposable.

I have seen dogs (never GSDs) with this fifth toe / 'dew claw' placed so high up the pastern that the owners have chosen to have them removed; they get in the way, they catch on things, they're a bleedin' nuisance.

I have ALSO seen dogs that had an extra toe, when on the front leg(s) usually higher up than that 'fifth toe' - it's a condition called Polydactyly, and its not that uncommon in mammals.  You should probably get out more.

We just recently whelped a litter of pups with rear dew claws.

We had 3 boys, 1 sable standard coat, 1 bi color LC, 1 black standard coat.

2 black females 1 standard coat, 1 LC.

2 bi color females standard coat.

It was a duel sired litter, we own all three dogs.

The only pups without rear dew claws were the two black females,

the others had their rear dew claws taken off at 3 days old.

Our dogs are mostly DDR Bloodlines, and the dam's sire has rear dew claws, someone told me that rear dew claws can be found in the DDR dogs.....

One had double rear dew claws!!!

We kept the LC black female (Oeht's pup) and the Bi color female (Rollie's pup)  Here's a group photo of everyone at seven weeks!!! And also a photo of the LC Solid Black, she's very confident and has great courage!!!  :)

An imageHey guys, Thanks much for those replies. Yes, its the "rear" dew claw and theyre just loose skin with a nail and the pups (not my breeding) are almost 5 months now. I have no intention of showing, i was just validating my experience since last i saw rear dew claws on Rottweilers. GSDs need the front dew claw especially when their useing their feet when grabing food or prey, i give raw Ox thrachea and raw soft bone to my pups and i see those front claws are useful.

So, those "C" tails are called GAY TAILS ?   well i better make use of that trait and let her show me what shes capable of, right now im seeing a good grabber and will not let go, i had to choke her up and lift her by the neck on all 4 legs before she outed the prey. Theres a little improvement though she is now somewhat listening to my voice when she hears the "aus" command.

Happy Weekend, yah 'all !

@ marsiii
In my first post ^^^ I promised to find you some reading on the tail issue:

Thred titles (including, firstly, the one I was actually remembering) are as follows -

"gay tail" - currently this one is sitting on Page 9 of the General Forum back history.

& site Search:
"Showline With Curly Tail"

"Is this a German Shepherd ?"

"what do u think about cow hocks"

"Tail towards left side".

Plenty of views on all aspects of what causes tail flying; what can be done about it; etc. Happy surfing.

Thanks Hundmutter,
i really am getting confused differentiating a hooked end (like that of a fishhook) to an a "S" like drop while gaiting. It's more like the way cats carry their tails.
IM READING THE OTHER THREAD NOW! :)

Hey, i forgot to ask...
Will you be disqualified at GSD specialty dogshows if you donot remove your dogs rear Dew claws?
is having the rear dew claw a fault to the GSD standard?

Thanks

by SitasMom on 09 August 2017 - 17:08

In my experience, in 20 litters, only 1 puppy has had rear dewclaws.

Like Sita'smom, the Showdogs I've known rarely had any dew claws to worry about, having been bred out of them long ago. The dogs I have had dew claws on were never shown, so I have not come across the problem. And IDK but off the top of my head I don't remember the Standard even mentioning it. You can check that for yourself, Marsii, I don't have time.
And if it isn't mentioned in the Standard as a Fault, maybe (an American) Show cannot mark you down on it ? Officially. Don't suppose many Judges would like it, though, so just on their opinion on the day, you might find them overlooking your dog. I'd expect that to happen in this country, probably.

Reason why im asking is, i plan to show her (at least once in her lifetime) at the annual GSD specialty show, hoping there would be foreign judges. Shes 6 months now and its not about the vet costs, i am just concerned about the effect on her (Psychologically), and im not into alterations. As a kid who grew up with working dogs, i know one thing that differentiates the GSD with Dobes and Rotts, shes supposed to be a natural "wolf-like" dog and doesnt go to much changes (other than the coat-color-change)

I just recently read about the Black and Yellow (light Tan) color on GSDs and its an old "thingy" compared to the Black and Reds of today GSDs. Having those rear dew claws on both legs make her spread her rear legs while standing at rest (much like the way Dutchies and Mals stand) and that those rear dew claws "were" present only on old GSD bloodlines.

Thanks.
