I am new to dog training. I don't mean just sit and stay but high level training. I have a 5 month old male and female. The female I have had since a puppy. The male I have imported from Germany and I think I hit the jackpot with him. Anyway, I want to start training obedience and I see videos on here where the dog is walking beside the owners hip, head up, and licking their hand. How or what kind of treat is on the hand to keep the animals attention like that? It seems its something stickey like peanut butter? Anyway, thanks for your help in advance

Go watch the video, "the power of food rewards" and "the power of tug rewards " by Michael Ellis. I think I have the titles a bit wrong but enough for you to find them.

They will explain everything in great detail.

I can get links if you have any problem finding titles.

Then progress to the tug vid.

"

DESCRIPTION
This is the first training video in our Michael Ellis series of dog training. It’s also the the foundation of the training program Michael and Leerburg promote. We begin by brining up an old wives tail, which is “dog trainers should never use food rewards because there will come a time when the trainer will not have food to reward the dog, then what will you do?”. As with most old wives tails, nothing could be further from the truth. People who make this statement lack dog training experience. There following are just a few of the major concepts that Michael Ellis will cover in the video:......."

I knew an AKC trainer I went to for puppy classes, and she demonstrated the heal with using a jar of baby food in the hand with her European Rottweiler. It was an Ahhh-haaaaa, moment.

Michael Ellis videos are a great way to start. However, if you feel as though you hit the jack pot with this dog, find a trainer in your are who trains utilizing operant conditioning and the marker system. Also, if you have any clubs in the area, pay them a visit and if they are reputable, lean on them and learn, learn, learn. 5 months old is still in the imprinting phase. Videos will only take you so far....

If you want to do high-level training, and not just obedience, then find IPO/schutzhund club(s) in your area and visit them. You may find the training to be something you will want to do. But beware - it is addictive, lol.

Clubs are great but not for everyone.
