We are talking about a breed,  not about dogs as a whole.

There is a BREED STANDARD, like it or not.

In case someone wants to breed blues livers piebalds or anything else-no problem-but he really shouldn't call those dogs GSDs.

There are rules for almost everything on earth-in case I want to play, I have to follow rules.

Someone doesn't like the rules? Play something else...

Just reread the posts-BritnyHon, I didn't want to make "pissing comments" - I just wanted to point out that as soon as you don't care about the standard any more ( and be it color "only" ), others will use this example for their own wrongdoing  ( size, ears, and so on ).

But I forgot, the US of AMERICA are different...

Why don't we change the Basketball rules? A basket that high is not good for Europeans..  is this okay for you?

by Swarnendu on 16 February 2017 - 19:02

If the baskets are lowered, the working standard of the players are also lowered.

I personally don't like a German Croucher or an American Ski-sloper, or a floppy ear, or an off-colour. I like the "LOOKS" of a bred-to-standard GSD.

But, what does a floppy ear or an off-colour has to do with the working ability of a GSD?

If the Breed Standard is questionable, why cannot we ask questions, Susie?

Questionable in case of what?

I would never cull off colored, off sized, "out of standard" but otherwise healthy dogs - BUT people shouldn't be allowed to breed them ( = no pedigrees ).

No difference to working ability...

by Gustav on 16 February 2017 - 19:02

I agree Susie, I would never breed a dog with no working ability or one with disqualifying faults to the standard. PERIOD!. Regardless of color!

by Swarnendu on 16 February 2017 - 20:02

Agree 100% to Susie & Gustav... These dogs shouldn't be bred from, as long as they are NOT breedworthy as per the WUSV Standard (I'm sure Gustav ALSO meant THAT Standard).

But WHY floppy ears or off-colours are NOT breedworthy according to the Standard?

That's what is QUESTIONABLE....

Swarn, it 's not that difficult - get involved and vote...otherwise either accept or leave...

EVERY RECOGNIZED BREED does have a written standard - why breed those dogs in case you don't like the standard?

Doesn't make sense.

by Swarnendu on 16 February 2017 - 20:02

Susie, I asked a straightforward question which you didn't answer...

WHY floppy ears or off-colours are NOT breedworthy according to the Standard?

Why these are considered "faults" of a "working dog" breed, when a cow-hock or a banana-back isn't?

When enough legitimate questions are allowed to be asked, AND discussed with specific points, public opinion will form and the Breed Standard WILL change, it's not a Holy Book.

I didn't answer? Sorry...

Floppy ears are hereditary, color is hereditary, so are banana backs and cow hocks - all of this considered faults... no difference.

All of us know there is a difference between the "written" standard and people filling this standard with life ( even in my country ).

I believe in the written standard - and I am able to distinguish between "functional dogs" and "breedworthy dogs" according to the standard of the GSD breed.

I don't care much about men made winners, but about working ability and conformation- you should know by now.

Your questions may be smart, but people not followIng "the rules" don't care, no matter your questions.

Kind regards

Good post, Susie!
