I did research on the offspring of Kery's parents, grandparents and great grandparents. I've seen blacks produced from Jaguar, Greta, Furo and from Yesa's sire (couldn't find anything extra on the dam, but I only researched for maybe five/ten minutes). It's not so far fetched that there has been a recessive black in the lines if the majority of the family tree is aw/a.

I drew a really bad Punnett Square, so here you go.

An imageSo, there's a 50% chance that both of Kery's parents inherited both sable and black from their parents.

Interesting.... but neither parent could/did inherit the sable gene because they aren't sable right? If a dog inherits sable they must be sable right since it's dominant?

Both of Kery's parents are sable dogs. It's dominant, so that's what you see (phenotype), but genetically, they also carry the black recessive (genotype).

So, even though they're both sable, it is possible for them to have black puppies. From what I've seen, all the dogs in the pedigree were aw/a which is sable with the black recessive.

Oh, do you mean Allee's parents? No, none of the puppies in her litter could be sable because Kery is black and Tira is black and tan. The most dominant gene would be black and tan because bicolor is recessive to black and tan.

I see what you're saying. My puppy carries sable and solid black as well so if bred to a sable also carrying the black gene could produce sable and all black puppies. I guess more clear to me as my dogs dam is solid black.

It amazes me how breeding all those sables so many generations and they still are carrying the recessive black gene all that time. This is why genetics is such and interesting thing!

I just looked at Tira's pedigree. It's possible that she got Bicolor from Rosso and black and tan from her dam, because her dam has the black and tan recessive. Since black and tan is dominant to bicolor, there's a possibility that Tira carries both.

That would make Allee a possible bicolor.

Now that I've seen the pictures of Allee's chest, I'm going to say she's a bicolor. The other bicolors Rosso produced looked like that.

This is all very interesting stuff. Thanks for all the information.
