Stephanitz' book in the 1901 edition was my New Year's Day (re-)read, and so I added photos and more to pdb. Have a look under "Latest entries" in the left hand column, choose 'Latest pictures' and "Latest galleries", these entries are on two pages there. When you run the cursor over the picture, it tells you name of the dog, or you can click on the photo to go to the pedigree entry:

Photos for SZ numbers 2 (Mari), 3 (Schwabenmädle), 4 (Brünhild Grafrath), 7 (Freya Grafrath), 8 (Siegmund Grafrath), 19, 24, 25, 43, 54, 61, 64, 65, 102, 103, 113, 114, 160, 227.

Happy New Year to you and your dogs!

PS Pedigree Research Colleague Lineage just sent me a note about 'living bridges', trees used as bridges. So cool. Maybe that is what we do :)

Very interesting, Lineage and Living Fence!

The sire of the above dog (Max) is Wolf Rude. That translates quite simply as 'Wolf dog'!

So, maybe the rumors of wolf blood in the GSD aren't 'just rumors'!

Max's dam is given as Madel Hundin, which means Madel bitch. (Sorry, don't know how to do the umlauts on the German words!

Sun, the dog simply was named "Wolf" - this name is not that uncommon over here.
The female was called "Mädel" - young girl/bitch
We are in the "old" registry now - almost no kennel names, only call names.
Rüde = male
Hündin = female

Lineage and Fence, where did you find the "SV old" reg no? I always thought they officially started with Hektor/Horand as no1.

Glad you are enjoying these!

Not sure, Susie, what your question is about the "SV old" reg no. Did you perhaps mean SVALT? That is not an official SV registration. To my knowledge, it was Yvonne Hecht who came up with the idea of a numbering system for the dogs that hadn't been registered but had produced registered dogs. She created SVALT, very useful for early pedigree research but not part of the SZ registration system.

The registration numbers for the dogs that I referred to in my OP were actually in Stephanitz' book, I didn't even need to go to the Zuchtbuch although it's always good practice to verify information. Also, if you study the early pedigrees and track many pedigrees to the early dogs, then, like everything one works much with, you know the names and numbers of the early dogs by heart :).

The photos and dogs I entered were not included in later editions. It only occurred to me now to check whether the dogs and photos in the 1901 edition were actually in PDB. I was very happy to add them!
Will do same with the 1905 edition in the future. The photos of the far more extensive later editions are already in PDB.

Yes, the SV registration numbers started with Horand von Grafrath as SZ 1. Mari von Grafrath was SZ 2, Schwabenmädle SZ 3.

Wolf and Mädel were very common call names for working sheep dogs of the time. Stephanitz actually didn't like the name Wolf b/c he didn't want any association of GSDs with wolves. To add "Rüde" (male dog) and "Hündin" (bitch) is a registry convention, as not all of the names are unambiguous with respect to gender. Also, there were so many dogs called Greif, Wolf, Flora, Mädel, etc, that the owners name or the location is often added in parentheses.

Yes, I wondered about SVALT, didn´t know they even exist...

GSD Lineage

Hi Susie,
In the late 1800s and early 1900s when most registries started, animals could be registered decades after their dates of birth or death, often because they had much influence in future pedigrees, or simply because they did very well at show or trial and people wanted them recorded and differenciated from all the other Rex's or Max's of the time. Also, animals were advertised with their actual registry numbers in these old ads and books.

Max von der Krone SZ 160 certainly left a lineage behind, with (141 descendants in 3 generations.) and his inbred double grand daughter & GG has number SZ 4 Brünhild von Grafrath. (another with great image thanks to LF)

Rex von Karlsruhe (SZ 00061) had (89 descendants in 3 generations). If you click on there their progeny trees, it all comes up so beautifully, and those are just the ones entered here, many more probably existed.

Living, Thank you so much for explaining SVALT numbering.

Sunsilver, for the ß try holding the Alt (alternate) or Option key and then hit the s key.

"Glad you are enjoying these!"

I am enjoying these types of threads, keep educating us. Lineage, Ancestry, LF and Heritage I can't say it enough times but I try. Thank you for doing a hell of a job on the pedigrees. Thumbs UpThumbs Up
