Oops - looks like the original post was deleted!

Anyhow, the question was what is a breed survey.

The breed survey (Körung) is an assessment of a qualified dog's strengths and weaknesses. The purpose is not only to select the most breedworthy dogs but also to make suggestions for best breeding uses of a dog. This could be 'use to improve pigmentation, working ability, etc'. The breed report (Körbericht) is the brief write-up of the results. A breed survey judge (Körmeister) assesses the dogs and writes the reports.

At least one performance title (HGH, IPO, PH), a show title, an endurance test, and health clearances (HD/ED) have to be passed before a dog qualifies for a breed survey. A breed survey includes judging of conformation and a 'courage test' (the latter introduced in 1967, I believe).

Breed surveys are held by the SV and those national GSD clubs that are in accord with it.

The RSV has a two step process with a list of criteria:

Thank you for taking the time to explain what a breed report is to me. I appreciate it!

Bumping this as I received messages asking the same question.

I should perhaps add that since the development of the West German show line with greatly altered conformation and limited to only one color, breed reports are not any more written from a unified interpretation of the SV's standard. Since the same group of breeders and judges who developed this type of GSD also ran the SV for many years, many (not all) judges rate dogs of the traditional conformation and colors other than black/red lower than the type promoted by this influential group. Quite a few WL breeders do not bother with breed surveys anymore for that reason. Only GSDs of the new show line conformation and black/red color are shown at the SV's top conformation show BSZS. This is but one aspect of the split in our breed.

So when you read praise for "high withers" think of a sloping back and the concomitant rear angulation, etc. Whatever your preference for either type may be.
