Hi, My name is Chris, I'm new here, I work as a volunteer for an animal rescue charity in Cebu, Philippines. I rescued 2 dogs, 2 days ago from a homeowner whose house got burned down in one of the slums here, she called me to collect her dogs but the poor things are riddled with fleas and their fur is all matted. Because I have no budget I'm looking at ways to save money. does anyone know of any cheap ways to remove fleas without buying materials or chemicals, maybe a home remedy or methods that can be used which are inexpensive, unfortunately 'Brownie and Fluffy' got slightly burnt in the fire also which is another reason i dont want to put any chemicals on them and Fluffy is also pregnant so i need to be extra careful. any thoughts or ideas please let me know, thanks

Hi Chris,

A friend once gave me a recepie that was something like this:

+/- 300 ml alcool or vinagar

+/- 300 ml jonhson oil (the one used on babys)

the shell of 1 lemon or orange

1 pack of spice cloves (not sure it is translated this way but is the spice in the picture)

Put it all in a strong botle and let it rest for about a week, don't forget to mix it every day, then put the liquid true a strainer in to a spray bottle, regularly srpay it on the dog fur and brush it.

I tried the alcool version and it did not kill the bugs but it defenitly helped to keep then away. Wink Smile

Chris, Ivory liquid dish soap works relatively well to cause fleas to be able to be washed off a dog with out poisoning the dog. I used to use it when I lived in Florida before there was any flea poison to use on dogs other than seven dust. The fleas became resistant to 5% seven, so 10% had to be used, but toxic.
I put almost straight Ivory Liquid dish detergent all over the dog, with a little water on my hands to get the soap to be applied. Let it stand on the dog for five minutes or so...have the dog in a tub where the fleas can't jump off onto the ground. After the soaking, rinse with warm water till all the soap is removed. Using a flea comb during rinsing is helpful to collect the fleas and drop them into a container with rubbing alcohol in it. The fleas are not moving using the ivory liquid, but I have seen them 'come around' and be able to jump. Some will be dead, but dropping them into a container of alcohol eliminates any life in them. The ivory liquid is safe on very small puppies, too.

Joanro:  I thought it was Dawn dishsoap;  nice to know Ivory works too;  thanks for sharing that info...  Nan

You're right, Dawn is the best. I have used ivory, too. Its not as harsh as the dawn.

If you want to pick off the fleas or ticks one by one you can put them in a small container of Water & Dawn (Dishwasher Detergent)...They will drown...

If the dog's coats are matted then you will probably shave them first...I think I'd wash them first then shave them...then you might want to re-wash them again in a short period of time...

If you have ticks on the dog and have to get them off one by one the best way is to put a little Dawn Dishwasher Detergent on a Cotton Ball or a piece of Tissue Paper...Put the Dawn & Cotton Ball on the tick...hold it there for a short while and the tick will release and come off in the Cotton Ball...Then kill the little booger...

**I've needed to get a tick off one of my dogs and didn't have any Dawn close by...So I used a cheap dishwasher detergent in place of the Dawn...It works the same...
