Vaccine Reactions and Lepto
Why the Lepto vaccines are not all that useful

Despite changes in the recommendations for many vaccines to reduce the number given .. many veterinarians continue to sell and promote useless vacccination .. why?? .. because it drives business to their door and wellness checks are a cash cow.

Vaccinating for lepto is a really controversial topic. There was a good discussion a few years ago here and it was interesting to see how people's thoughts on vaccinating for lepto varied depending on geographic location- particularly, if you lived in the Detroit area (outbreak due to exposure to contaminated rat urine). I disagree with Dr. Becker that lepto is readily treatable- the dogs that I know that contracted lepto either died or have resulting kidney issues.

It's readily treatable IF CAUGHT early...hence being extra vigilant.

I live in Michigan and asked my good friend, who is a dog/cat vet, about lepto and she said that the biggest issue for her is that it is fairly easy to treat, BUT so many of the symptoms mimic other things and people don't always arrive at a lepto diagnosis in time to avoid prolonged treatment and permanent damage. Having treatment available and getting to that diagnosis/treatment in time are different things. I'll admit, some of the lepto symptoms other dogs I know about have exibited are not necessarily things that would have me rushing a dog to the vet or asking about lepto.
