Mithuna

by Mithuna on 20 April 2015 - 21:04

My young girl just turned 8 months on Aug 15, which coincided with her first heat cycle. She tipped the scales at a cool 75 lbs. Here she is a few minutes ago ,waiting in the coat room before we head out to our evening walk

Hope you had an enjoyable walk together this evening, and managed to do so without getting rained on!

Sorry to have to tell you this, Mithuna, but lovely as she is, your feisty young girl is on the pudgy side...I doubt you can feel her ribcage without some firm pressure from your fingertips, and that means she's carrying too much weight.

My 8 month old female weighs just over 50 lbs., for comparison...

Love her reverse mask, Mithuna!

HEXE
She is actually not pudgy she is both muscular and larged boned, and she stands 24.5 ins at the withers. You can feel her rib with minimum pressure and the vet says her weight is normal. She has always been the " thick boned  muscular type" ( with a big head and short muzzle ) from  since a pup  ( see her below at just a tad over 3 months  )

<shrugs> Suit yourself...I'm sure that by basic pet dog standards, she is indeed at a 'normal' weight simply because she's not obese, but it's not about the number on the scale, it's the fitness of the dog itself.

I know she's always been a large-boned girl, Mithuna; what I'm referencing is in this seated photo of her, she looks to slightly over-developed in her forequarter, but it appears to be 'soft tissue' rather than toned muscle and I'm concerned that this is forcing the splayed placement of her forelegs. She doesn't look fat, she simply looks a bit pudgy and soft in the chest. I find her lovely nonetheless, as always, but there's a suggestion of potential pudginess if her diet & exercise balance aren't kept carefully managed ...or maybe it's just the angle of the photo.

Hexe

Trust me her fore quarter is very solid. She gets a hard hour exercise everyday....which includes 15 minutes of  very fast ball chase on a soft field. I have found a place where I can let her off lead for her exercises. Her diet is very high in protein ( Origen LBP plus boneless chicken breast, fortiflora, grizzly salmom oil, and some nusentia enzymes ). Thanks for sharing though, and keep well...and hope your dogs are all fine.

I do too think she is a tad overweight. I like to keep a growing puppy's body score slightly above a 4.

Out of curiosity, why all the extra supplements?

Mithuna, you seem to ask a lot of questions, then decide to do the opposite and then are unhappy when experienced people make comments about things an experienced eye sees.

I remember when you asked if she was growing too fast and about the diet. I said yes, and I would never ever supplement more protein and calcium on top of Orijen for a pup, and I absolutely wouldn't add more to the diet. Others agreed, IIRC, and you argued she was fine. Well, you asked. We answered.

I saw this earlier and neglected to comment because you really don't want to hear experienced opinions as has been proven time and again. However, I feel I have to back Hexe on this as I saw the pic and had the EXACT same thought! I have had my fair share of 4mo. old pups and bred a few more. The sit position is quite telling about bone structure and weight if you know what you're looking at. I would wager the dog is a good 10lbs overweight. That's a huge red flag, to me, because, remember, puppies don't get that fat; they simply grow much faster than they should with overfeeding and if a pup is that size and still overweight, regardless of how "muscular" (btw, I have never encountered an owner of a fat dog who didn't say the dog was "solid") the pup is, I'm worried she's in real danger of ortho/developmental disorders.

Pups should FREE excercise, not spurts of "hard exercise" while being confined for much of the day and overfed; this is a recipe for problems. I don't know what your lifestyle is; I'm just speaking generally.

Orijen LBP is JUST BARELY within acceptable limits of calcium to begin with; dumping raw meat and bones on top of it and then supplementing is really playing Russian roulette, especially with that dog's genetics...but I said this months ago.

I hope she doesn't suffer for your stubbornness. Hexe, hntrjmpr, myself, and others have no agenda here except the best outcome for you and your dog.

For comparison, this is my Veronika von der Prinzenbruecke. She is 7mos. today. Look at her neck and chest and angles and compare to your dog.
