So I hope I do not cause any problems asking this. I am looking to buy a German shepherd puppy in the next year or so. I am doing research right now so I can make sure I pick a GOOD breeder and I pick the right puppy for what I need. I like certain things about both the working line and the show line and I also dislike some things about them but I understand the importance of finding a good breeder who will help me find the right dog for me and my family. I like both the working lines and the west German show line. I wouldn't mind showing but I am not a fan of extreme reaching (I believe is what it's called) that a lot of show line shepherds have. I am most interested in schutzhund, personal protection, SAR, competitive obedience, and possibly herding. I am looking for good respected and reputable breeders who could match me with my best dog and would possibly be willing to be a mentor to me on all aspects of the German Shepherd from raising, training, showing, history, bloodlines, and quality breeding of these dogs. If anyone can help me the more I research the breed and breeders the more overwhelming it can get with so many breeders and not sure which one is out for improving the breed and which ones just want money. I hope someone can help me with this?

Where are you?

Dmarkwick, just take a look at the breeders raising and training their own dogs, no matter if show- or workingline.
Only a person who trains/titles his own breedingstock is a "working dog" breeder in my opinion.

I live around Houston Tx. I would prefer the breeder to be as close as possible to me cause I want a mentor but I am willing to pay for shipping.
I want to make sure the parents have had all testing done- hips &gel owe, cardiac and DM clear... It would be great if they are kkl 1a rated.

Susie, so I should check and make sure the breeder does their own raising and training of their dogs? About how many years of experience should I look for?

It´s not about years, it´s about dedication and knowledge about the own dogs.
Everybody is able to import/buy good dogs - the 2. generation + is important, a breeder should be proud of his / her "results" and keep the line going.
Only with training/testing a breeder is able to weed out the dogs, that are not breedworthy.
There should be some clubs in the Houston area, there you may find some experienced people.

Ok thank you Susie that makes a lot of sense.

I recommend you go see your puppy, parents both sire/dam and pick for yourself. Make sure all have health clearances, and Like Susie said they work their dogs, maybe the might not have titles but working dogs; also join a local dog club and meet people that may have references or referrals for you to go see. Local is best but if you do ship still go see your puppy. Good luck Nan

get in your car and go watch many groups train. Your post states a lot of energy for learning and growth in the breed. What would you tell me if i said '' I expect my first born child this winter. I do not care if it is a boy or girl, but I want to take him/her to soccer, karate, music lessons, modern dance, pre college math classes and ice hockey'' Start witnessing now each sport or type of training you mention. then focus on breeders .
