uggh I know what you mean and I HATE that.  Well it's got to be especially frustrating because your dog has a good hard grip but is somehow giving the impression that he is chewing and sloppy when he outs it  doing that tongue thing.  I hope you find a solution, if you do, please post it.  Since you do a 100% motivational only retrieve, which I don't do, I hesitate to give any advise, plus even if you used corrections, my advise, like bumping his back teeth with it, or using the ecollar  might be totally wrong anyway.  I wish you good luck.

I also did a motivational retrieve or whatever you want to call it (backchained with a marker and reward).  Once I moved away from food teaching the hold part with food I had a ball under my chin.  Would your dog like something like that?  The dog pulls his head back when he outs because he is anticipating the ball dropping from my chin.  Now, I don't *always* have one there and even if I do he doesn't always get it at that point (usually has to do all three retrieves and then heel out before I drop it) but he still thinks he might get it every time and there's no chance he's going to miss it!

One thing you could try - and I don't know if this will help since I used this when I was working on building more speed and consistency coming back - would be the reward under the chin but don't do the formal sit, hold, wait, out, reward.  When the dog is coming in fast, give the out command as soon as you can reach out and snatch the dumbbell (or just say out and let him drop it if your toes aren't in the way) and reward from under the chin.  Then he will have to out quick to get his reward and won't be able to push the dumbbell out to you with his tongue b/c he's not sitting right in front of you. Maybe, maybe not....just thinking out loud...

GuppyFry,
Can you post a video of your dog doing the retrieve?  Seeing is easier to understand as compared to reading.

VK I was going to suggest the same thing.  Either a toy under your chin, dropped to the dog after he releases the db.....dog will pop his head back looking for the toy.  Or if you prefer using food, spit a treat to him after he releases, his head will snap back looking for the treat.   I think a treat would work better, 1 second and it's gone and you can quickly bring the dog into another front.

Start out working just the calm hold in front with release.  Teach the dog to calmly hold the db even when your hands are on it.  I think if you combine that with teaching him to catch a cookie you'll get the release you're after.
