I found some other threads that were too old to post.

My dog is just about 10 months and has been on earthborn holistic puppy food.  Just about a week ago I noticed hair loss on the tip of his ear.  Being that the past threads were old any info on this.  It is very dry and cold here.

Things I have recently done: 1. Put ACV (w/ mother) on the spot and give him a teaspoon of it a day.  I also switched him to raw 3 days ago (not because Of the hair loss).  Any info? Advice?

How cold is it outside ? Is he sending much time outside?

From the photo looks like a problem the dog can live with.  Could be wearing it off on a dog door or something in the environment.  Other dogs could be giving the cheap ear piercing treatment as well when playing.  I have three females with everything from slight to moderate ear loss due to excessive roughness.  Yours could be due to cold but I doubt it unless the dog stays outside in cold weather for long periods.  I have more problems with flies on the ear tips causing damage in the Summer and my dogs last winter did not seem to be bothered by the cold as long as they were very well fed, dry, and out of the wind on super cold days ( here around 5-10 degrees F ).  Not sure at 10 months the pup has an adult coat so perhaps the coat is still a little fragile compared to a 3 year old.

It's been in the low 30's.  We work 2x day outside for about 10-15 mins and then we usually go for a 45 min walk.  Some of the old threads mentioned dry air in the house w/ heat and when humidity increases that hair came back.  Others mentioned allergies.  I did not know if anyone had new info on this since those threads.

My heat is boiler heat to coils..gets dry in this old house.  I mentioned before his hair looking really dry.  Since raw feeding just the few days brushing him seemed a lot easier and smooth.  I also read do a thyroid test.

I have posted on previous threads about this as both my dogs had ear tip hair loss.  Try some sort of moisturizer on the ear to see if that helps.  I like coconut oil but it is a little greasy.

If that doesn't work you could ask your vet about the Pentoxifylline.  However, right now your dog doesn't look as bad as mine did with the hair loss.  Mine also got crusty/scabby on the tips.

Try the simplest ideas first.  Hopefully it's just the dryness and a moisturizer (and the raw food) will help.

Zwei- yeah I read your old thread but is said the thread was too old to post on it.  I just noticed it and I can see what appears to be scabbing on it.  We have coconut oil for my baby's eczema so we have plenty of that.  I'll try the natural stuff before the vet.  I'm already annoyed at their letters reminding me to get my dog fixed.

Btw he's not lethargic, seems happy and normal as always.  Thanks all for the info
