I have 2 gsd,one is a 8yr old female, the other is 1yr male, lately they have started to fight.what is the best way to brake up a fight when I am alone?

What triggers the fight? Is it food, jealousy over you? In any case, best to keep them separated. You can get injured badly trying break up a dog fight, plus, the old dog could end up killed in the fight.

May you never have to use it!

The best cure for dog fights is prevention. Learn to recognize the warning signs. Keep the dogs separate when you can't be there in person to supervise. If they are convinced you are the alpha, they will listen to you and not fight. However, if you are not able to exercise this sort of control, either keep them separated all the time, or rehome one of them.

By the time there are warning signs, its usually too late. Prevention by keeping the dogs separated is the only sfe solution ; if they have gotten into a fight once, its going or happen again. There i s zero benefit having two dogs together who fight. these are two gsds, not little Maltese...the owner is going to get hurt breaking up a fight.

Having a male fight with a female is very rare. Leerberg mentions it specifically, and says it is due to the male being very dominant, and fighting to be alpha over the female.

This is a serious situation. Your female could wind up dead. What are you doing with the male as far as training goes? You may need to seek help from a professional trainer with this dog.

Don't brush off how serious this can be. My friend's husband made the mistake of putting 2 of her male dogs out in the same yard when two of the females were in heat. The younger dog killed the older one.

(And yes, she's having a hard time forgiving him...the husband, that is!)

if a female is willing to get violent for real the male usually backs off

by OpticNerve on 15 January 2015 - 17:01

if the male is neutered the female might just look at him like another female

SS is  correct you have to be top dog and not afraid and be assertive. If cant do these things you need to part with one of the dogs its hard but the best thing for you and the dogs.

Train and test with muzzles is my advice.  As soon as one reacts, jump in there.  You need to be Alfa.
