Hey there everyone...New to this forum, so hello!  I am the owner of two GSD's.  I have a question about coat type.  My older female (only 7 months) is WGSL/WL.  Sire is WGSL (black and red, though possibly bi color as he was all black with just red points), and the dam is sable.  The dam had a more standard coat, while the sire had a long, silky coat (from what I gather, this is the preferred coat for SL?).  Anyways, I was trying to get a visualization on the outcome of her coat.  It seems to be that this type of breeding produces a plush coat.  Lena has started getting this huge, thick ring of fur, but right now it's around her neck and on her rump area.  Can I expect her coat to fill out much more than this?  I know that the coat can change in color/texture dramatically over a couple of years.  Anyone willing to share a photo of their plush coat?

Hi, Detroit! Welcome!
What about a picture to get an idea of your dog?
Only a sidenote: A bicolored WGSL is more than rare, may you tell us the pedigree of your dog?

Hey there Susie and not a problem...It's not a very strong pedigree I'm afraid.  Whether or not it is true, she was a product of an "accidental coupling".  Looks like at some point in the pedigree there was a point, but that kind of went of the track from what I can see...Here's the pedigree:

Also in regards to the sire's coloring, I am guessing either he was a bicolor or a blanket black and red.  He did have tar heels though, and only red on his legs, face, and ears...

One more thing, this is a picture from last month (her ears were still really floppy then lol) but so you can see what I am seeing since it's more visible in certain positions

Your pup looks like a lot of fun! Beautiful! Looks like a "regular" coat.
You are right about the pedigree, the early ancestors are out of show/workinglines.
Not a very strong pedigree? There is no proof of anything ( health, working abilities ), but your pup may become the best dog of the world for you.
i´d try to participate in any kind of sport with her, she doesn´t look like a coach potatoe...
I wouldn´t use a dog with a pedigree like this for breeding, but that doesn´t say anything about your dog in special.

Kind regards

Thank you Susie...I am definitely planning on doing some work with both of my shepherds.  My youngest one had some health problems (she was a foster from BYB situation), and now that she is more caught up in growth and health, we are registering for our CGC's here shortly.  She can be a little "soft" on occasion with us, but not so much with people outside of our household.  Thinking of getting her into some nose work or possibly herding.  I figured once all the obedience is down, and I feel comfy with handling her, that we will have her evaluated and see where she might best fit in.  Thank you once again for your clarification!

The skill of dog ownership is to find the best activity for the dogs, no matter which venue. Your dogs don´t care about their breed, but they do care about you and your relationship to them. Just have fun! Everything else doesn´t matter.

Take care

The dog in the picture is a normal coat, not that plush and certainly not a long coat. Her color is sable, though it has a pattern but color is sable. In regards to coat length it may get a bit longer, season plays a bit of role here, but I wouldn't expect the coat to fill a lot further. A beautiful dog, and welcome on board.
