We had to have my son's Beloved Pit Bull, put down yesetrday. He was only 5 1/2. He was neutered last Tuesday because is is a law in our city that all Pits be neutered. The dog seemed to be recovering well until Friday evening when he began hemorrhaging. We rushed him to the emergency clinic where it was discovered that he has type B hemophilia.
They gave him a blood transfusion and we had hoped he would get better, but yesterday the vet said there was no hope and if we did not have him put him down he would bleed out. My husband, son and I went. My son was so brave in front of the dog. I have had to have a pet put down before and it is very hard, but this was the hardest thing to witness my son going through this.. We spent $2000 and it would have been worth every cent if we could have saved him

My son got the dog as a 6 weeks old pup for his 18th birthday when I was very ill with cancer r and the dog has truly been his best friend.t I am worried about him.

I am also worred because if Benny's testicle does not descend I will have to neuter him. His maternal grandfather ( Argus v.h. Feuerstein ) bled out after a routine surgery ( not neuter) at age 4 and the breeder told me the vet ran every test in the book and they could not find the reason. Benny parents are both very healthy as is . I have read the hemophilia is even more common in GSD;s them Pits. Should I risk cancer and not neuter him?

Hi Shepherdpal, I am so sorry for you sons loss and your loss too. Anytime you go to surgery there is a risk, I like to have a complete blood work done before any surgery.  Even when you go to a specialist there can be risks involved.  Find a vet that you trust for the surgery that is going to be done. Good luck.
Always,
Cee

Hemophilia, is very much present  the GSD. I  would have  your dog  tested, so then you will know.

So sorry for your son's loss...how hard this had to be for him.  Life lessons come hard.  Be sure to have tests run before you let the vet do anything and don't let them tell you it's not necessary...it's your money, your dog.  If you don't feel comfortable with the vet, leave and find another.  Hopefully Benny will drop both and it won't be any issue.
