June 2nd, National Dog Day
- Chonino was a German Shepherd dog, born on April 4th, 1975. On December 15th 1977, he was accepted to the Argentine Federal Police after passing all the aptitude and psychological tests required to become a Police Dog. He was trained as a security dog, and classified as a prey dog. This means that he could only act when either the police officers he was assigned to, or innocent bystanders, were at risk.
- His first job was att he River Plate Stadium, in the soccer match that inaugurated the World Cup of 1978, held in our country. On june 2nd, 1983, Chonino was assigned on patrol in Police Station Nº 45, in the Federal Capital, to officers Luis Sibert and Jorge Iani. That day, the police officers identified two suspects and when they asked to see their identity, there was a terrible shoot-out
- One of the police officers, Chonino's owner, was hurt. It was then that, in defense of his guide, the dog pounced on one of the criminals. When he did this, the other criminal shot him to death.
- Chonino had a piece of the criminal's pocket, which had the criminal's identity card, in his mouth. thanks to this act, the thieves were identified. Five days later, Buenos Aires police officers arrested the criminals.
- Cholito's body lies in the Argentine Federal Police Circle. To remember him, within the premises of the Mounted Police, there is a bronze statue and in his honor, the Buenos Aires City Government gave the dog's name to a passage in the neighborhood of Palermo. Since 1991, the street that joins Casares Avenue and Salguero street is called Chonino Passage.
- Since 1996, due to the request made by journalist and writer Cora Cané, and with the support of her readers, Dog Day is celebrated June 2nd. On June 2nd, 1996, after the Police Musical Band entered the premises, Police Captain Jorge Depresbitero, chief of the Dog Division, announced the inauguration of the Dog Training Course, since then called, "Chonino."

Thanks Yelowrose. Remains to say that finally Chonino laboriously dragged himself 100 meters toward where his owner was lying badly injured and Chonino lied down on his body with a piece of pocket and a wallet with the identify document of the criminal in his mouth. Then he died. This is a very sad story of loyalty.

Death is sad no matter whose or where..We face it daily and have to pull the strength to carry on.
Valour in our German shepherd breed is something almost not heard of in other breeds. Shepherd is a word that fits the animal we call Ours
Often being our protector, guardian, defender, and keeper.
