A concern dog owner approached with the xrays below of a female dog of 12 months old. The vet has told her that she has severe bilateral hip dysplasia and needs both hips replaced.
Could I please get any comments on the below before she goes in for a second opinion in 2 weeks time to a specialist.
Is the shadowing, pelvic bone etc, that of a female ? Are the 2 xrays even of the same dog ?

The positioning is terrible, though I'm not sure how much tighter the hips would look. If this were my dog, I would wait until 2, have the hips re xrayed. In the meantime, I would swim the poo out of this dog. That may help tighten everything up. It also may not. Was she anywhere near a heat cycle when they were taken? Also, I would have xrays taken by someone who knows what they are doing. The necks look thickened, but ? I think fho, if needbe, is a better option.

The owner needs to get weight off that dog first and foremost. The dog is quite overweight, especially for a growing pup. The x-ray is that of a female and they both appear to be of the same overweight dog. There was a study done on Labs that showed a direct correlation between weight and incidence of hip dysplasia. I tried finding the study again, but could only find reference to it on this site: http://www.alllabs.com/labrador-library/trimming-the-fat

I don't see any remodeling. This is sublaxation only? How is the dog moving? Is the dog in any pain? The tissues in between the bones matter much and cushion the bones from rubbing against each other. You can't see those tissues on an X-ray.

That's what I see too, just subluxation which is a contributing factor for dysplasia. Could it be the positioning, overweight, near a heat cycle etc causing them to look so subluxated? Dunno.

Thank you for all your feedback.
I don't know if she was in a heat cycle ? Will try and found out.
Yes she is overweight ! And in pain when over-exercises. They say she walks like a cowboy ! (Legs wide apart)

Also when she over-exercises she tends to drag her her feet. No problems when she rests !
