Does anyone here know the cause of Ox's untimely death at the relatively young age of 8?

If Jiri doesn't know, how would any of us know?
RIP, Ox.

RIP, Ox.

why don't you email/phone hans or get on his message board. there is a current thread re ox and hans states cause of death unknown, just found passed away. i am on that board as "zip".

I saw that on Facebook. It was said on there that Jiri chose not to do a necropsy out of respect for Ox. I can understand that, but for as popular of a stud as he was, and the fact that his sire also passed away at 8 yrs... it would've been helpful for his puppys/grandpuppys owners to know, I think.
Ah well. What's done is done. RIP Ox.

That is very sad news.
Dawulf,
His father had cancer..correct me if I am wrong, I believe it was bladder cancer.
RIP Ox, you were a nice one.

Dawulf, I agree with you that since he was such a good producer, it would be helpful to know the health details that may have caused his death. I am not bashing anyone, but seem his owner owes it to those that have kids and grand kids of his to give some kind of explanation. Had this dog not been such an impact on the breed, I don't think it would be such issue with not knowing. JMO.
We own one of his daughter and not knowing why her sire and her grandsire died at such a young age, really makes us rethink to include her in our breeding program. Just too much of the unknown to take chances.

I had a litter sired by Ox. At least two of the 7 pups have congenital kidney abnormalities (which can shorten the lifespan to 8yrs or less). The dam tests normal kidney function but I am in the process of testing her and her pups to see if she carries the gene for renal dysplasia. If she is negative and the pups are positive than it can be assumed that gene was carried from Ox. I am not jumping to conclusions since congenital kidney issues can be caused by a variety issues from both dam and sire side. I need to go through the process of testing. She did however, before I knew of kidney problems from the ox litter have another litter, by a different sire, with no known kidney issues in that litter. You can find out more about the genetic test for RD at dogenes.com

That would be important information to share, that is the dam's status. What kind of problems did the pups have ?, how was that detected.

I haven't used that test from dogenes, but I know people who have and there is some disagreement as to how pertinent it is. It's not my story to tell, so that's all I'll say, but perhaps those who have had experience with it will chime in and at least PM.

k91 thank you for posting,
I am very interested to see and "hear" about this. I have a full brother to Ox. So far no reports of kidney problems in any of the puppies out of Orin but I am open and aware of genes possibly going "iffy" at times!
