But just look at the ears.

Depends. Could have been a dog whose ears didn't stand, and who had chronic issues with infections, and cropping the ears was a better choice than allowing the ear canals to become so scarred that they became occluded, which would lead to having to completely opening the length of the ear canals surgically.

Could be a case of the dog serving as a livestock guardian in an area where there are frequent wolf encounters.

Could be just jackhole owners who didn't know any better.

Could be photoshopped.

Both good answers.

You'd be surprised how many of my puppy buyers ask me if their ears will need to be cropped to stand! Geez!

I would bet since this is a "defense" crop that this dog had his ears injured, maybe his mama bit one or something;  but they are even with this crop so it was done for cosmetic reasons I would say.  Otherwise military??  Not sure.  Reason I say this is because I recently met a GSD brood bitch that had one of her ears torn by another dog, not sure when it happened, puppyhood or adult, but really did destract from her beauty.  She looked old and tired with it torn off.  Soooo, would say cosmetic purposes.  ??  Just guessing, do you know who this dog is?  Nan

Nan, no clue.  Just found the picture surfing the web.

it's a spoof and the original thread is on the germanshepherds forum and has been recycled all over the web a few times.
