is whining just something that is more common in some lines than in others? we have 3 gsd's right now and my 6 year old german showline girl is very whiney, moans and groans when she gets excited about anything....it's so bad i have barely brought her with me lately if i am going to be in public where there are lots of people. she hates sitting still and if she knows we are getting ready to go somewhere she gets quite loud. my 2 year old black and tan is a mix of american working/show and canadian working. she barely whines at all, and my boyfriend's white american/canadian showline does not whine at all. is there any way to know ahead of time if a puppy will grow up to be a whining dog? we joke a lot about the whining that Spunky does but i have always wondered why she whines so much more than the others. she is a great dog, just very vocal!

whinning could be because the dog is not getting enough mental/ physical activity and is frustrated excited or could be weak nerves.... other things..... cant dianose the dog without knowing the dog and situation. I leaned towards activity level and metal stimulation because the other two gsds you mentioned would not have come from the higher drives bred for schutzhund and are relaxed so maybe your dog needs more work to tire it out.

she is the only one of the 3 that throws herself a thousand percent into any kind of physical work i ask of her, backpacking, pulling me on the bike, etc, whatever i ask, she is dying to do it, and only when she is so tired that she practically collapses, does she stay mostly quiet. i worry about overexerting her....i mean, isn't she almost a senior?

I have an 11 year old still running strong so no.... not a senior. These were meant to be a working breed.

okay, i haven't had very many dogs that lived this age or longer and she slows down faster than she used to so i was getting worried about her. i also forgot to add the other 2 are quiet when we are already out and on the go but the whole household starts screaming before walks....3 gsd's and 3 chi's but then it's just because they are all excited. mostly she is whining from excitement but the other 2 are way quieter.

Many people that have had akc showline and or whites who later get german showline find a huge difference and then most of them have many issues if they jump to a working lines dog and expect it to be conetent with the same exercise and mental as the previous lower drive bred dogs. Dogs will feed off the energy of other dogs and I am sure the chi population really amps things if all are going out together.
All your dogs die before six? omg why? I only lost two before six one to a bear and another to euthanasia for sever temperament and health issues at 15 months of age.

my male gsd died of bloat at age 5 and my female lab/gsd/husky died of cancer at 8. other dogs i had, i gave up when i relocated due to a bad relationship, or they got stolen (5 stolen, only got the lab/gsd/husky mix back). i have a doctor's note now that lets me keep all the dogs i have now, and i gave my poodle to my ex because he loved her and she was starting fights with my 6 year old gsd. i briefly owned an all black female from Jerland which i rehomed for temperament issues, and i have had Spunky for 6 years and thought all gsd's were whiney, although my male wasn't, my mixed female was, so i was surprised the younger 2 gsd's didn't turn out whiney as well.

they do all feed off each other lol if we are out walking and the chi's don't like someone then one starts barking and the whole pack backs them up lol good thing i have a good grip on the leashes.

I think the opposite, really. My vocal boy is the one with the brains!
