My long coat decided to cover her left side in pine tar from a tree.. Anyone know how to remove it? I just tried baby oil and margarine, didn't work too well. Now I have an oily, sticky, and slightly buttery, pine tree smelling dog   :/

turpentine, mineral spirits, and pinesol, in that order.

let it soak with rubbing alcohol to break it down then soak it with dawn dish detergent.(the animal safe vs) and rub it out.

Both have worked for me with dogs and horses.

Butter (or margarine)!  (Well it worked for ME!)

I was getting ready to tar my cross country skis, and the lid of the pine tar tin flew up in the air when I pried it open, and  hit me on the forehead, putting a big glob of pine tar in my hair. I called up the shop that sold it to me, and that's what they recommended.

It worked like a charm!

I would not use turps or mineral spirits on my dog. THEY ARE POISONOUS!!

You wash the solvents off, it isn't a problem. Depends how nasty the tar, how sticky. Not a big deal. Also, Goo B Gone, gets sticky stuff off, too.

I used the rubbing alcohol and dawn, since those I had in the house already. It got most of it off!! I had to cut some patches of fur from around her eyes and on top of her muzzle, since I didn't want to risk getting anything into her eyes or nose.. So she is looking a little funny lol.. She is sulking on her bed, she is not happy with all this bathing and grooming attention! Thank you guys!!

Hand Sanitizer...it's amazing, will take pine tar off skin, clothes, cars, and dogs..my poor guy will sometimes have his toes stuck together with pine sap.  I clean them with the sanitizer, rinse, and then rub in some coconut oil to try to and repel the sap for next time.

Witch Hazel....massage it in, it takes it right out with no harmful chemicals.
I've used it on my horses, works great.

Personally I like the vegetable oil method the best.
