Your statement puzzles me a lil bit.  First you say she came in season a
few days ago.  Then you said it's been 17 days ?  They can be ready anywhere
between 10- 14 days from the first sign of blood.
Did you carefully watch her and know when the very first day was ?  The best
thing to do is get a progesterone test done.  And I  never just put my dogs
together to breed, I am right there with a  helping hand if needed.  Anything
can  happen especially to a virgin female.

I have a female like that. Will eat any male who attempts to mount her. Not a breeding candidate if the mating I  can't be accomplished naturally, though I am positive there are those who would AI anyway. I have no solution for you because I myself will not intervene if mother nature says "no way".

17 days is not neccesarily to late it can happen. However you obviously just dont know what your doing ,and have no reason to breed your dog. So plain and simple dont breed her.

Wow thats kinda harsh Harrisonsgsd26. We all started somewhere and least the owner came her to get some "constructive" advise and did some of the necessary testing. That's more than a lot of people do who come here and sell puppies for oodles with NO testing.

I am of the same thought that dogs who do not breed naturally be pulled from the gene pool. But if your insistant on breeding her, you may be looking at AI with progesterone testing to let you know when she is ready. I would be testing her from this point on so you will know when the time is right. If she wont take a male, then you can collect from the male and head off to the vet.

If a male isn't strong enough to dominate a strong female, to breed her, you have the wrong male. she's testing him, like female nurse sharks and wolves test a prospective mate. If the dude doesn't have the moxie to overpower her, he doesn't get to father her pups. Pulling a strong female from the gene pool is a sure way to further f$$$k up the breed. Find a male that has the strength to breed her.
A female wolf will kill a weakling male that would dare to breed her.
The female is stuck with all the work rearing pups, teaching and training them to self-sufficiency. All the male has to do to contribute his genes, is show her he is worthy of producing strong pups for her, so that she's not wasting her time on weaklings from a weak male.

How's that for discovery....only I didn't see that on discovery. I have females that if I didn't have males strong enough, would not get bred, as I don't believe in AI. (except for logistics or a dead dog's contribution) But to IA because of lack of libido or a weak female who screams and wants to hide or run, rather than fight....no.

Refreshing to see there is still some valuable information contributed on this forum. It's few and far between. Thanks Joanro
