That's not what we're talking about- I used it, as a descriptive, then GSDPack got riled up about the term, and Grayson made his/her comment so I was clarifying that I was simply describing a "type" of black and tan. Actually, I guess it sort of is what we're talking about, Daryl. LOL. I just hadn't meant to be technical about it when I used it. This bicolor stuff gets really silly sometimes. I'm with you- let Molly have her exclusive, lol.

I always thought the term melanistic was used for a dog carrying the black gene (for a b/t anyways...).

I think I'll stick to my solid blacks... much less confusing! Wink Smile

Grayson, agouti either refers to (1) a number of rodent-like species of Central and South America, (2) the banded hairs we in the GSD world like to refer to as sable, and will continue to do so, or (3) the A locus on the chromosome of numerous mammalian species.  You can call sable "agouti" if it pleases you, but when most of us refer to agouti while discussing genetics, we're talking about the LOCUS on the chromosome that controls all major patterns for the breed.

Melanism is a general term, referring to darkening pigment, sometimes of skin, and oftentimes of hair.  Melanism in eastern gray squirrels look like the dark sable of DDR GSD's.  Melanism in Jaguars is due to dominant mutations in MC1R, while melanism in leopards is due to recessive mutations at agouti.  Melanism in GSD's occurs from both causes.

No, it's not, Paula. That's Capri. I swear. Capri with a penis. She figured she'd try something different in her old age.

If the term "melanistic" anything can be used I suppose the same rules would apply to calling a very dark sable dog a "black" sable.  Just descriptive wording, plus, sometimes, marketing.  I've stopped calling dogs black sables, but I don't hang someone for calling their dog black sable.  That's just argumentative in my book.  Just another "No, you're wrong..here's why".
