A year ago, I did not know that German dogs were divided into WL/SL. Through 10% research and 90% luck, I managed to hook up with a breeder who provided me with an excellent S/L pup that also exhibits very good traits for Sch. and he has started and is doing very well in his training.

However, I can see that I like this sport very much and feel that there is a solid W/L dog in my future (next 12 mo. or so), especially since my BOC has a couple of excellent W/L females.

So, my question is, in choosing an 8 wk. to 12 wk. pup for sport, what evaluations do you find most useful. I do know that there is no such thing as a sure fire pup, just looking for info that serious breeders/trainers have found successful.

Thanks,

Rik

I am a newbie to SchH so if I were to choose a WL pup I would choose a breeder that trains and titles their dogs and has enough knowledge about evaluating dogs to match me with the appropriate puppy.  I guess I'd be a little put off if I was supposed to be able to evaluate them and choose for myself.  If there's more than one fitting my needs as far as temperament and drive, I would just spend as much time with the litter as possible and see which one fits.  But otherwise I'd expect the breeder to know which are the best sport prospects.

Rik,

There was an entire thread on choosing a breeder.  You might check the archives for it.  It inlcudes as one of the top suggestions, going to a breeder who has titled, and is titling not only their own breeding stock, but the dogs they breed.  If they don't want to work the dogs, why should anyone else?   Are there people in their sch club training and titling dogs from the breeder's kennel?  Those folks would have seen both (or at least one) parent working and has a clue about what is being bred.  If there are repeat litters, is it because pups from the first litter are doing so well in sch clubs?

There are lots of different temperament tests people use to select  puppies.  Most in the sport for  a while have their own set of tests derived from a couple (or more) "established" temperament tests, combined with their own developed preferences.

Thanks Mystere, I'll look that thread up.

Really, I'm just curious as to what traits people in the know like to see in a good sport prospect at that age.

I guess I could just walk through the run in a pair of my bell bottoms from the 70's and take the one that doesn't let go. That is if I could still fit in them.

Best,
Rik
