Hi
Is it common for show quality pups to have loose hind legs i.e., the are not firm like DDR shepherd puppies! Has it something to do with the confirmation. I have seen this loose hind legs in many top show quality pups. But they are active, can jump, run and do everything like how a pup does!

Unfortunetly it's quite common for showdogs to have wobbly hinglegs. You might want to checkout this video: http://youtu.be/SV7elIy_Aoo?t=28s that is related to what you're asking for. You will even have a top ortho vet giving out his professional opinion about what he has seen.

The "wobbly" back legs as you are describing is comon in the Show dog, whether it is American or German Show lines. It does not ALWAYS mean it has HD.  The show lines have a tendency to have more rear angulation not seen in the working lines or the DDR lines. Having more rear angulation allows for a more flashy sidegait, because,  The dogs have the ability to have a more extreme underdrive and follow through which propels the dog forward therefore covering more ground with each individual stride.  The working lines and DDR lines do not have that capablilty because of having more rear angulation.  I have had both types and honestly believe that the showline if bred correctly and NOT OVER extreme, can be just as functional as the working lines.

However with that said, I have noticed that the working lines/DRR lines have more cases of HD than the America and German showlines.  I am only speaking from MY personal experience.  I had been in the American Showlines GSDs for alot longer than the German or DDR working lines. The number of HD cases in the working/DDR lines have been alot more than the showlines from any country.  Please, don't bash me for what I have said. I only stated an opinion and do not wish to start a free for all.  I hope this helps the OP understand the wobbly hindlegs they are seeing.

Have a nice day.
Happy Valentines Day!

Lets try to be nice to each other!

Wow its sad that a judge would actually say this.....perhaps the show lines need to prove that they can WORK which is afterall what the breed is all about.

The more angulation...the more chance of  "the ganglies or wobblies".....nothing to do with HD.
EXTREME angles look worse.
Most  WGSL & ASL have more angulation in both front and rear than the average WL does.....because of that, when they are young....for MOST, it is simply a "stage" they go through.

Here is what I think is an extreme example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1LjkGP091g

I have seen a dog, not this bad but loose, as an adult who could never properly jump the meter hurdle. Of course something else could have been going on like bad hips or elbows.

If that is what breeders are putting out there and people are buying that;  to me that is a pet not to be bred and pass that on.  Obviously that is not what is being done.  Conditioning is vital to any animal and that means from birth all thru their lifetime.

Those dogs at the show are pets;  not to be shown in conformation but can still be worked and valued and given some type of a job.    This breed is going into the dumper if that is what people are showing as a representative of the breed and that would pertain to all working dogs.  That is an inheritable structural breakdown in the GSD.  And one that needs to be addressed unless we want to see that type rear movement later down the road.  Very sad indeed.

If you want to see more of the same, just watch the video for the GSDs at Westminister! Hardly one of them had nice, firm hocks, when you watched them from the rear!

And now the German dogs are going down the same road...  Sad Smile

On the whole, the German SL are still better than the American, but the one in that first video was a total disaster!

The 6 foot vertical wall would seperate them all!. Why do you think it was taken out!

IMO a wobbly puppy is not a "show quality puppy" regardless of lines.  Of my past puppies, my WGSL has actually been the most "dry"/tight from the beginning, which is a major reason why I chose him.  It's not like these things aren't pretty easy to evaluate even at 8 weeks.  My  west WL dog was more "loose" than the SL but still nothing like a lot of puppies I see (see below).  I just won't tolerate cow hocks, dropped pasterns, and very loose, wobbly movement.  If I don't like how a puppy looks and moves at 6-8 weeks I won't finalize the sale and take him home, period.  I shouldn't have to "let the dog grow into" himself or anything like that.  I show all my dogs regardless of lines but it's not just about the show ring, why would I want to train and work a dog that can't walk normally?  When my SL was 3 months old I showed him against some Am Line puppies at an AKC match for fun and he actually won because they were so floppy they could barely walk.

My WGSL at 3 months old doing a UKC puppy match with a handler that wanted to try showing a GSD

My last WL puppy, actually more loose/wobbly than the SL but no cow hocks and a nicely put together dog
