Is she trying to bury them or is she nesting? Always after 2 or 3 days of whelping our girls go in to a digging frenzy. We now have a plastic crate in the room with the metal door off and mom goes in there and nests and nests and does not mess up the box.

There is not one that has not done this. I thought it was too warm in the room but not the case. We have one at the moment, pups are 2 1/2 wks old. She gets out of the box, goes to town in the crate and then goes back in the box. I watch her on a monitor but she is upstairs so it is easy to hear.

I swear never fails that they start this digging and yes pups get covered up with the lambswool.

Me either.  Sounds like Gretchen has it hard all the way around.  Maybe just put towels down (mom can't shred) and tape them to the whelping box.

Rose got sick within about 3 days of having the puppies.  I had to help bottle feed and by day 7, Rose was more than willing just to let me do all the work.  She did not try to harm the pups, she just was not keen on feeding or having them crawl on her.  I insisted that she take care of them and after a couple of days, Rose settled back down.

Good luck.  Sounds like about the time she settles into the job (if ever), the teeth will start coming in and that makes things worse.

Cant believe I mised this. Thanks, Fawn, for leeting me know. I have had a case of the *mean reds* since Tiffany died, and I kind of cocooned and have been dealing with Hurricane Sandy repairs.  How wonderful of you to take this girl in, Melissa! The pups are adorable. I will see if I can have Julie pop in here with any suggestions, as she takes in pregnant moms all the time and has dealt with al kinds of weird behavior. I bet she will also help find homes for the babies, when they are ready, if you havent placed them. Cant wait to see more pics :)

Has she been doing this since they were born or is this something new that she has just started doing?

Has anything changed in your home since she whelped....(new dog or person inside that she does not know, etc) it really sounds like she is nervous for some reason, if she has been taking care of them before now. Is this her first litter?

New Beginnings,
I have no idea if this is her first litter or not as she is a rescue. Poor girl came in super prego. I've whelped and raised a few of my own litters,
and never this type of behavior from my girls, which is why it baffles me.

She started jumping out of the box 2 days ago. Unfortunately, Hubby said no whelping in the house (I'm working on him!), and the box weighs a
solid 100 + lbs (solid wood) so I can't move it on my own anyways. They are in my dog building, heated of course. Temp in the building is not
too warm and not too cold. No new dogs, no new people, same routine.

I think she is insecure to begin with. May have been abused as she cannot come to me to put a leash on without groveling on the ground toward
me. Yup, lots of issues for this little girlie. I'll work on those after the puppies are weaned.

I think I have about half of them placed so far :) I will definately ask if we need help :)

Thank you!!
Melissa

Looks like you have them coming along okay, despite Gretchen's
reluctance.  Great job, Melba.  Aren't they cute ?
