My female is in heat and her kennel is next to my male. Last night she almost busted out of her kennel. I just moved her inside into a indoor kennel, one of  the airport approved kennels. My husband and I work 12 hour shifts, so we have a big problem, she will be locked up all that time. I just don't know what else to do. How long do I need to keep them away from each other and how long will her cycle last? I'm new to this, she is just past a year old and all my past dogs were altered. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks

Usually a minimum of 21 days.  This is the average and many females are outside of this time frame.  Talk to your vet to find out what are the different stages to a heat cycle.

Can you board one of them at your vets?  Or send the male to a friend/family member for a few weeks?

Its funny you should ask because I have 2 Gsds tht a keep in the house (male and female). When the female goes in heat i have to watch them very close but i always know when i need to keep them separated (in crates and alternate letting them out). They both give me the signs)))). Once the signs are evident then my male will not eat for 4 days (like clock work for each heat cycle) and once he starts eating then i wait another maybe 2 days just to be on the safe side. Some may ask why i dont breed them....well, that is another story in itself. BUT, i will say that I paid a very high price for these dogs (by a broker or whatever here in the USA and brought over from germany and i will at least give you the state KANSAS)...very nice dogs and pedigree but the fact that the female SV pedigrees were pulled by the SV and the male had ED...I just got screwed. BUT, i need to stay on topic.,..i LOVE my dogs and they will always be my childrenand we work everyday).  Just yesterday my brother came by the house while i was at work and my male had tore off a latch that was welded in 4 places....so dont underestimate what it will take for these guys and girls to get together))).

I think in your situation i would have one of them neutered if you are not there to make sure it does not happen chances are it will.
Sorry you got screwed.

Figure about a month before it's safe to let them be in the same room again.
Crate both dog in different ends of the house with ALL doors closed and locked if possible.
First week and a half she is bleeding, about 13 to 15 days she will start activly seeking the male (usually) You might notice her holding her tail to the side, or moving her vulva when she is close to the male. If possiable have the male go visit family, friends or the vet for a while. Because dogs can mate through kennels, fences, eat through doors or walls, jump through windows, over fences and all sorts os crazy stuff. Some become monkeys i swear. Have her wear sanitray pants int eh house to prevent spotting on the rugs. Some females are very tidy and other look like a crime scene.
If they are not top quality dog with titles and ribbons and lots of health clearences,  why not have her spayed after the heat passes.
Best of luck!

If you want to keep them kenneled outdoors... you may want to put up a divider or privacy screen between the kennels... sometimes thats enough... just depends on your dogs.

Wow, I can tell this is going to be al long few weeks at the house. Thank you for all the great information and ideas for me and the dogs. I'm working tonight but Todd is home to walk Akeemi. This weekend we both will be on day shift so I might get a welded wire kennel for the back porch. The kennel she broke out of was a chain type, she never even tried to get out until now. I can tell her to go to the kennel, open the fence in the yard and she runs straight for her kennel. With her in heat I cant keep her in the yard because she will dig out to get to Ando. Both dogs are going nuts, Ando is tearing things up and being very aggressive.
Thanks again
