You can now donate directly to Dr Clemmons Degenerative Myelopathy research. All donations are tax deductible! Please join us in the fight to eliminate DM from our breed. It is time to devote funds to researching the type of Degenerative Myelopathy that is unique to OUR breed, German Shepherd Dog Myelopathy. Many have generously supported the DM research of other breeds by
participating in the OFA DM DNA Testing- its now time for research of our own breed to be supported. I hope you will all consider donating to research that will be geared towards our specific breed.

No replies? Where is everyone who rushed to do the OFA DM DNA Test that is not valid for our breed? Even Dr Coates has said there is a different location of a gene for GSDM! Doesnt anyone REALLY want to find the truth????????? Are our dogs going to continue to die from this disease??? Is it just easier to test for a disease or breed does not develop, thus making puppy sales easier...
ok.. I am really ngry, now...

"...thus making puppy sales easier". I beg your pardon. Unless I'm mistaken, it was this forum that made it clear to anyone wanting to buy a puppy to make certain, in fact , insist on seeing documentation that the breeder has indeed DM tested their dogs. As a matter of fact, testing with the bogus DM test has nothing to do with puppy sales. I have had ONE person ask if my dogs are tested.
Who was it that said, " with a half glass of milk, in front of a mirror, turn in circles and repeat over and over, "No matter what I do , they are going to bad mouth me"." I need some milk. (wouldn't you know it, all the goats are dry! )

The problem is bigger than all of that.  The discrepancy of the results and research in-fighting is not a good environment to solicit for significant funders. It is an upward battle, I am afraid.

I tried to find specifically am endowment fund listed as you have written it on this topic thread, at Univ. of Florida Foundation home site. I don't see it. I do find the link you post as active, eventually, but it is never specifically named for Dr. Clemmons, as far as I can tell.

IMHO:  The percieved in-fighting and conflicting declarations between the rival researchers of Univ. M and Univ. FL, is being combined with the urgency of concerned dog owners.

It is not  accurate to think one can understand the conquering of this disease, depending on a grassroots plea for everyone's hard earned dollars.  I don't think this is making the research go any where near where it needs to be. Noble as it may be to want it to happen that way.

When the discrepancies are ironed out, we all will stand a better chance for the best science getting the funding the public is interested in supporting.

Dr Clemmons is the only one who researches DM at the U of Fla, Bee.

You are right about the urgency of the DM dog owners. Every day many cross over the bridge, with no hope in sight. All the roads are leading in the wrong direction. I knew it when this whole business started, I tried to scientifically explain why the chosen path wouldnt work, showed and explained the diagnostic test results to make it easier to understand. Now the money directed there has been wasted and should have gone to researching DM of the GSD, not other breeds. I am still not over the loss of Missie T.  I never will be over ger loss.  it is painful to me to see nothing changing as far as research support , and every day "and another one down and another one down and another one bites the dust..."

Thanks for sharing. I just don't log onto PDB very much.  I am glad to see he has persisted in continuing the research. I know of dogs with diagnosis of DM on necropsy who were "clear" on the U of M test and don't put a lot of stock in it.

Good news indeed.

Whatever the situation between researchers, and the politics involved, I am happy that Dr Clemmons can continue to receive funds to continue research down a different path.

Not least IMO was that he appeared to have been onto a promising 'treatment' of a kind for dogs with DM, and wouldn't that be like winning the lottery to anyone whose dog became affected by this dread disease.
