i am amazed about the sheer number of unethical breeder stories even allowing for both sides of the story. how could anyone these days leave anything to chance or verbal agreement etc. i would pay the extra bucks and get a lawyer to draw up a contract. i thought i was rare case when i paid a large deposit to a breeder for a particular mating and he collected more deposits than three females dogs could have and of course no pup, no return on the deposit another trusting noob ripped off with no recourse except undermining the breeders sales as much as possible in every venue possible. i won't make that mistake again personally prolly cos i won't be part of the purebred dog world again - because it sux.

We all live and learn, some like to think there are honest people in this world and these people are called Plaintiffs lol I never realized how many
dirty breeders and buyers there are until I joined this site.
I guess I thought we all loved dogs and are in it for them and we are all on this site to share stories, help each other, give advice, receive advice. You do see some of that but sadly you see more attacks than anything. It was eye opening to say the least.
I once posted a picture of my dog in a Stack attempt, myself and my two girls did it for fun and I was told to go to German Shepherd school lol...never made that mistake again to share a picture that was meant to be for fun :) It's a shame really

Unfortunately there are some unethical breeders out there. But, even with the best of breeders things can happen in a litter of puppies. Even the best bred litters can have a pup with issues. I agree that it is very difficult for a novice to find a breeder that they can trust and who won't take advantage of them. Some supposed "knowledgeable and respected" breeders have sold dogs with known health defects and taken advantage of a new buyer. Threads that discuss issues with breeders are necessary for people to learn who the good breeders are and whom to avoid. Tragically, some people don't do the necessary research or even when warned will not listen. Any breeder that breeds more than a few litters will eventually produce a pup or dog with some genetic or health issues. How the breeder rectifies the problem and treats the client is what determines how the breeder is perceived and says a lot about them.
Just as there are a few threads on here telling horror stories there are double or even triple that many praising the good reputable breeders. It seems the "horror story" threads get the most attention, the most responses and the most hits. I have posted many times on threads promoting great breeders, I know several that I would trust to get a dog from. I agree that we need more threads promoting ethical breeders.

i don't think anyone doubts that the best breeders with best knowledge WILL at times produce pups with genetic problems - that is not the problem or what people complain about - it's what goes down after the problem has been identified that counts. slamdunc i think you have been sneaky and tried to divert the issue into a lesser but related issue, i think that is what they call spin. - you a breeder...jk.

vk4gsd There are plenty of good breeders out there that are in it for the betterment of the breed and are not just looking to line their pockets. The breeders that you have been seeing, I am sure they at one time had the passion for the breed improvement as others do now. Perhaps they got "Burnt Out" or just jaded and have lost their passion. Now it is more about money. In this economy I am not shocked to see it, surprised that there seems to be so many right now but not totally unexpected. There is more fraud and theft going on nation wide.
THEskridge, thats what happens when surrounded by people that know it all but have little tolerance for those that are just learning. They have spent their time and tears, paid their dues and expect newcomers to learn thru trial and error, and if you dont follow the advice given OMG what an idiot you are. Been there done that. But just remember, While those that know it all seem to be everywhere, those that know it all and truly care about the breed, are willing to be helpful and answer questions are just as numerous, they just tend to not post as much unless they are being helpful :)

Nope, I am not a breeder! I raise all of my dogs from pups and have never bred a litter. Nothing sneaky here, sorry to disappoint.

Slam, it's very true what you said. However there are vindictive people who can't be satisfied, no matter what. I know that this is not usually the situation. But this is a serious problem when people go to the Internet to spread libelous material as though it is fact, since most readers believe what is posted. Not every one is guilty as charged. Unfortunately, once on the Internet, the damage is done and nothing can make it go away. But that's why they do it....might as well put a gun to the person's head and pull the trigger, it'd be less painful.

no prob man - i strangely repect the sneaky snake that stole my money, he saw me coming a mile off and read me like a book. it was an education i needed. a bit embarrassed about it now but the guy has made the error of thinking that it is over - i do hold grudges and sure i got it wrong once but i think i can guess who will be squirming when we actually cross paths - when you do no person wrong intentionall or fix yr wrong doings you kind of walk different to the guys that take advantage of innocents. what goes around comes around.

No way am I paying extra money and involving an attorney just to get a dog! I just do my research and I get what I get. So far this has worked for me and I've been very happy with all my dogs, from the puppies to the adopted adults to the purebreds from breeders to the free ones and the rescue mutt. I buy my purebred dogs on full registration with no strings attached and do not require any sort of "guarantee". They are my responsibility from the beginning so there's no reason for me to have to go after a breeder or have any problems if we don't see eye to eye later on. I guess coming from rescue first (and I'm still involved in rescue) the whole idea of contracts and warranties and guarantees on a dog is rather foreign to me. I don't buy a dog I'm not equipped to take care of.
