Vom Haus Edinburgh

by Vom Haus Edinburgh on 30 November 2012 - 15:11

I am writing for a friend that has a 5 year old female GS that has started scabbing, losing hair, blistering, licking, scratching and now she says has an odor about her.     She wants to change her diet to begin the process of elimination as now she is feeding Purina ONE. She also is going to bathe her in Ketochlor Shampoo and also wondering what opinions were on starting her on Ketoconazole Antibiotics 200mg (the fish kind). Looking for any thoughts and suggestions.     No vet involved at this point, she is not working and renting a room for her living quarters, so I am trying to help. She is going purely on symptoms. She has done the flea elimination process, bathed her weekly but it continues to come back. Looking for any home Remedies.   Thank you everyone

Sounds like your on the right track so far. Ditch the Purina One, nothing but a bag of ground corn and chicken feathers. (Total crap in my opinion) If she is tight on money try Nutro not the top of the shelf but way better than Purina.
She can also try Malaseb shampoo available on line. Works to treat both yeast and bacteria. One little note about Malaseb shampoo, it has no detergent action so bath the dog first in regular shampoo and then let the Keto/mala soak on the dog for at least 10 minutes. (same thing for Ketochlor, no detergent action will not get the dog clean) This is the very important part! Do not wash it off right away! And after use a diluted conditioner to help sooth the skin and prevent the dog's skin from drying out. Only bath the dog every two weeks if you can help it. Weekly bathing can be very drying to the skin causing more problems.
My old office manager has a GSD that suffered yeast in the summer and this program got her a lot of relief. I'm a retired groomer, so i'm used these projducts for years with a lot of success.

A few months ago someone posted and excellent video of a vet discussing yeast problems in dogs.  I'm sorry I don't remember who posted or the name of the vets site, and when I do a search it does not come up.  But, I am also not sure if you have to search with the exact title of the post,.  Some of the suggestions I remember were, eliminating all sugars in all forms from the diet,  Sugar, moisture and heat feed yeast.  Soaking the feet in a solution of hydrogen peroxide, WHITE vinegar and water to treat between the toes and nail beds. I think somewhere I saw, no oatmeal baths, grains convert to sugar and feed the yeast on the body.   NO APPLE Cider vinegar, it is too much sugar...hopefully whoever posted the vet site will see this and re-post and none of the treatments cost a lot of money.
