My dog has met 100s of dogs while on leash and been fine but today we were pasing another adult female shepherd she knows. They have interacted off leash before while playing ball together. They live down the street from me. We passed by on the side walk and they sniffed each other fine but my dog turned around and nipped the other bitch in the bum above her tail. THe the other dog was FURious. Anyone here know what might have brought this on? Would introducing these 2 again without leashes in a nutral area (field) be a bad idea?
It looked like a nasty bite but i asked the owner (my friend) to check it over and he said it was okay it just was wet.
BOth are adult bitches just over 2.

From my personal experience (and from what others on here told me) when I introduced a new female to my existing male and female is that the ladies just simply can't be trusted with each other and they do this.
Sure, sometimes in the yard my two females will be playing and having a grand time then all of a sudden I assume one makes a comment about ones hair or shoes that day and here come some teeth.
I'm adding some humor there but being honest I don't know what vibe one of them will randomly give off that makes that happen but it does. Daily. I seldom let them out at the same time and never unsupervised.

does bum nipping mean anything? though? or was it just a nasty gesture?

Not that I know of. I guess it was just there to nip as she was walking away.

Inserting a touch of humor. I am glad the issue was quickly under control and no damage done.
I think the 1st dog said "bite me" and the 2nd dog said "fine."

A bit more serious, I would be the bitches were just being that..... As the poster said, bitches really can't be trusted around each other. Anything can set one off. It could be a heat thing. At the age of 2, heat cycles may not be all that regular. This incident may not mean that the dogs can't be friends, it just now means that one or both dogs have reached the age where they can show just how much of a bitch they can be; you will need to adjust to keep them under supervision together at all times.

do females usually get more bitchy as they age? the working line gsds usually? that have a high self worth?

Don't we all get more bitchy with age? LOL
I find they do tend to aget a bit crankier, I feel it comes along with their superiority complex that grows with each fabulous litter they produce or new accomplishment in their life LOL!!

when ever you put two females together I never trust them.. (we are talking dogs aren't we?) I hear horror stories then I hear someone who keeps several together and never has a problem. I never tolerate aggression towards other members regardless, and they learn that early on. I have had some females that I only could keep with males then I have some that would get along with the most aggressive females and no problem. so I personally think its the same as people. Personalities.

I've only owned two breeds of dogs. Labs and GSD. My oldest GSD female will be 4 in December. She is not fixed and has never been bred. She is not any more so than my 8mos old (also not fixed and obviously not bred). They are both equally compared in that department except with the older GSD being a more "stronger woman".
My Lab which is 11.5 yrs old was fixed at her first heat (around 8mos) and she is like Cartmans mom level (Southpark reference) of the b-word and it started around 8 and gets worse as she gets older. The lab will tolerate most all dogs unless they are female. The only reason she accepts my two female GSD's is because I slowly introduced, fed and treated them together. I made them have to get along in order to get rewarded. Even still they know not to cross her path so they just ignore her.
I have not had enough experience with older female GSD's yet but I do know that most all female GSD's and Labs that are not litter mates will not get along to well. I can't speak on if other breeds are the same. Also two females going at it in a fight is just brutal. They are out to kill -- not prove who is tougher.
Again, this is my personal experience and your milage may vary.
